Devonport villa’s refresh shows why a cohesive colour palette is key

Sometimes small changes can make a huge difference, especially when it comes to choosing neutral paint colours. The theme of this Auckland villa’s facelift was light, bright and modern, achieved with fresh coats of Resene paints. Resene Half Thorndon Cream is the star in this makeover. Designer Kate Alexander of Places and Graces worked her magic on the North Shore family home with a few renovations and a fresh colour palette. “A refresh is harder than a full renovation or new build – every decision can have a flow-on effect and it takes some clear decision making to stop it unravelling. It’s proof that a cohesive colour palette can really bring a place together.”

Homeowners Graham and Lindy had lived in the three-storey villa for about a year when they decided to sell to move closer to family. They’d already started on some renovations (like tearing up old carpet in the living room), but called upon Kate to devise a plan to give their villa a total refresh.

“Our design plan was based on making sense of the fixed elements that weren’t changing. We developed a mood board that used the existing colours as a starting point, i.e. kitchen cabinets, wooden floors, the brick fireplace,” Kate says. “Everything we chose to add in had to be in stock and ready to install, pretty tough given we did this refresh during Auckland’s covid-19 surge last year.”

Previous owners had gone to town over the last two decades decorating and renovating, and the three levels of the house all had a different feel. “We focused on bringing it back to feeling like one house. It was a balancing act of knowing what to change and what to keep.”

Walls across the home were refreshed in Resene Half Thorndon Cream, with trims and ceilings in Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream. “The palette needed to be a neutral scheme that felt modern and appealed to a wide audience, and consistency between all floors to help the house feel one again.”

Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream offered the perfect subtle difference between walls and trim. If it was all one colour it would have felt too monotonous, says Kate.

Starting in the kitchen, Kate says they focused on ways they could modernise the space. Kitchen cabinets were removed above the stove to add a sense of height to the room, and a central island was removed to open up the space. “The kitchen colours were the main driver of the home’s colour palette. We chose a neutral wall colour, Resene Half Thorndon Cream, that would help the space drop back, instead of the previous colours which highlighted the kitchen.”

The biggest colour (and overall) change was the home’s entrance. Kate says it’s the transformation she is most proud of. “Previous owners had introduced a textured finish to the hall and stairwell walls, and painted it in a 90s sea green. The current owners had considered having the texture removed, but we knew that once it was the same colour as the rest of the rooms it wouldn’t feel so dated.”

It wasn’t the texture that was dating the space, Kate explains, but the combination of the colour and texture. “Now in Resene Half Thorndon Cream the textured wall feels bang on trend.” In the bathroom, Kate removed a quirky half-round shower and instead drew the focus to its character items: the bath and vanity. We painted them the same colour as the bathroom wall in Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream. That way we can read their shape better, and the overall feeling is more modern.” Frosted glass was also added to allow light to pour in but still offer privacy.

“We changed the lighting throughout the home, keeping the colours neutral but the shapes interesting to include personality." Kate’s favourite Resene colour featured is Resene Raven, striking on the villa’s front door. The front porch and decks were given a contemporary touch with Resene Double Cod Grey, while still aligning with the character-style of the villa.

Both Kate and homeowners Graham and Lindy are delighted with the new vibe of the home and the way its elements fit together. “We managed to do it in an insanely tight timeframe too, while everyone was getting sick!” The home and its Resene paint facelift are ultimately proof of the big impact small changes can make, Kate says.

Top tip: Choosing a ceiling colour? A trick often used by interior designers when painting a ceiling is to use the same colour as the walls, but a shade or two lighter. Since ceilings appear in shadow, using exactly the same shade as you used on the walls will make the ceiling appear darker. For example, you might have Resene Sea Fog on your walls, so you’d go for Resene Quarter Sea Fog on the ceiling. Or if you’re using Resene Thorndon Cream on the walls, you could use Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream on the ceilings. The Resene Whites & Neutrals palette has up to six strength variations of popular Resene colours to make it easier to choose different strengths of the same colour for your walls and ceiling.

A front door in the gorgeous Resene Raven opens to the villa’s light-filled hallway. Previous owners had introduced a textured finish to the hall and stairwell walls, and painted it in a 90s sea green. It felt dated, but a refresh with walls in Resene Half Thorndon Cream and trims and ceiling in Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream has modernised the look.

The lounge feels both character and light-filled, with walls in Resene Half Thorndon Cream and trims and ceiling in Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream. “To re-design the home, we developed a mood board that used the ‘given’ existing colours as a starting point – i.e. kitchen cabinets, wooden floors, a brick fireplace, exterior paint colours, and went from there.”

One very heavy discussion point was the fireplace – whether to keep it natural or paint it white. We waited until the flooring had been done, once they were lighter (less orange) the brick fireplace felt right at home,” says Kate. The bricks offer wonderful contrast against the soft furnishings and walls in Resene Half Thorndon Cream , and trims and ceiling in Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream.

We changed the kitchen bench from dark grey granite to a light colour, further streamlining the space. Adding a white tap and sink brings the focus to the view. The white subway tiles fit the ‘cottage villa’ style. The horizontal layering helps the kitchen appear wider, and the gloss provides more light.” Walls in Resene Half Thorndon Cream and ceiling and trims in Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream

The home’s bedroom colours have been kept soft and natural. The three-storey home has a unique layout with a double bedroom, bathroom and a living area on each level. Each bedroom’s walls are in Resene Half Thorndon Cream, and ceiling and trims in Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream

“We removed a second door that although it enabled the bathroom to be accessed from the living room, it cut down on living room usable space. It also stopped the bathroom from feeling private. The modern brass mirror here contrasts with the more traditional taps.” Vanity, walls, ceiling and trims in Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream.
