Easy outdoor ideas to up your entertaining game this summer
Summer is here, and there’s nothing quite like a fresh outdoor space to spend time with family and friends while we enjoy the warm weather. While you might have the BBQ ready to go, give your guests a colourful and vibrant place to sit and hang out. With these simple ideas, using your favourite Resene paint and wood stain colours, you can spruce up your patio and be proud of your outdoor space this season.
Sunny refreshments
This summer toned space is painted in Resene Aspiring, with drinks trolley in Resene Yuma and deck stained in Resene Woodsman Uluru.
Why not reflect the sunny season with summer tones like warm yellows and gentle greens. This space is inviting for guests and with the added drinks trolley it provides a place to gather around and offer refreshments to your guests. You could try making your own trolley from scratch or find a secondhand one and give it a fresh coat of paint. If you’re loving the yellow and green theme, you can also try Resene Corn Field, Resene Sweet Corn, Resene Geneva and Resene Rice Paper. To add to this colour palette you could even fill a big glass pitcher with lemon and cucumber water and place it on your trolley – the perfect summer refreshment.
Transform with trellis
This outdoor wall is painted in Resene Triple Merino, with a screen in Resene Kashmir Blue to add a pop of colour. Breeze blocks painted in Resene Triple Merino, boards in Resene Tiri, trolley and woven tray table in Resene Indian Ink, planter boxes in Resene Smokescreen with dots in Resene Indian Ink, medium pot plant in Resene Alabaster and smaller pot plant in Resene Kashmir Blue. Project by Kate Alexander, image by Bryce Carleton.
It's amazing what you can do with leftover timber or wooden pallets. By simply painting them you can create a central feature and inviting space for guests in your outdoor area. These breeze blocks create a versatile seat, and the blue screen and planter boxes brighten up the otherwise neutral space. You can also add some cushions to make it more inviting and comfortable. Use your favourite colours for an engaging ‘pop’ – try a baby blue like Resene Sail, a burnt orange like Resene Tuscany or a grassy green like Resene Highland.
Reuse and refresh
Rejuvenate tired outdoor furniture with Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel in your favourite Resene hues. Table and bench painted in Resene Casper, seats painted in Resene Smokescreen, pots on the table in Resene London Hue and Resene Karaka, large pots in Resene Neutral Bay and Resene Gunmetal and vase on books in Resene Cut Glass. Jug from Everyday Needs, tray and throw from Bolt of Cloth, slippers from Superette, palms from Palmers Garden World Remuera. Project by Amber Armitage, image by Aimee Magne.
You don't need to race out and buy new furniture. Repainting existing furniture, or an old treasure you found at the secondhand store, is an option that can really transform a space and add colour. A bright table and chairs can be used as a focal point for family and friends to gather around. Use Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss tinted to the colour of your choice to paint outdoor furniture or restain with Resene Woodsman or Resene Timber and Furniture Gel.
Modernise a dated colour scheme with colours from the latest Resene The Range fashion colours to really get your outdoor areas on point. Try painting plant pots using Resene testpots to tie the look together. Simply apply a basecoat of Resene Aquapel & Terracotta Sealer inside and out of your terracotta pots before applying your favourite colours.
Bench Impress
Our bench is painted in Resene Spanish Green with the top stained in Resene Colorwood Dark Rimu.
Transform wooden pallets into a handy bench or standing bar for friends and family to gather around. This portable bench, made from wooden upcycled pallets, doesn’t take up too much space, and can be pushed against the wall when you’re not using it. For some summery colour combos, try painting your bench in Resene Paris White with the top in Resene Woodsman Whitewash, or Resene Breathless with the top in Resene Timber and Furniture Gel in Resene Silvered Grey.

Wall buddy
Our handy BBQ wall buddy is painted in Resene Carpe Diem paired with Resene Woodsman Whitewash on the inside.
Summer is here, which means entertaining al fresco and enjoying afternoons and evenings cranking up the barbecue on the deck. Take your outdoor cooking game to the next level and impress your guests by building a super cool outdoor barbecue shelf. Pair it with existing house colours for a seamless look or choose a bright shade that really stands out! Try an ocean blue like Resene Torea Bay, a pastoral green like Resene Paddock or a classy bold shade like Resene Nero.
