Find out which fabulous family room took out the top prize on Three’s The Block NZ this week
What a week on Three’s The Block NZ! The teams were under the pump to finish their family rooms and used luscious green Resene Middle Earth and elegant Resene Stack to create some sophisticated spaces.
The $7000 prize up for grabs was the talk of The Block NZ the past few episodes, with budgets tight and time running out. A give and take challenge saw the teams exchange colourful Resene testpots for a chance to win an additional point. In an exchange of moody greens, Meg & Dan received Resene Rivergum while Tim & Arthur were given Resene Paddock green to incorporate into their family room. Resene FX Metallic tinted to Resene Gold Dust was given to Connie & Rach and Dylan & Keegan/Maddy received Resene Blue Chill.
There was no shortage of drama; Dylan & Keegan’s sister Maddy came in to lend a hand while Keegan recovered from an injury and Tim & Arthur won the Game Changer challenge, receiving a +1. Both Connie & Rach and Meg & Dan felt the pressure this week, each completing an additional bedroom as well as creating a vibrant family room. Connie & Rach used an advantage they received in their House 1 safe and took $2500 off Dylan & Keegan.
Ultimately, Dylan, Keegan and Maddy’s hard work paid off this week and they took out the top prize for the first time in the competition with a polished modern family room in Resene Middle Earth and Resene Eighth Truffle.
We take a closer look at the four family rooms this week:
Dylan & Keegan’s Winning Family Room
Final Score: 27.5/30
The high ceilings of Dylan & Keegan’s winning family room are accentuated by the Resene Middle Earth feature wall and Rockcote Clay Decor fireplace supplied by Resene Construction Systems with a base colour of Resene Truffle. The Rockcote Clay Décor fireplace is a hand-applied clay plaster finish over plasterboard with a strata effect to emulate layered earth. The surrounding walls are in Resene Eighth Truffle with Resene Alabaster on the ceiling and trim.
Dylan & Keegan took out the top prize this week for their family room with help from their sister Maddy. The team created an elegant board and batten feature wall in Resene Middle Earth; a deep, pastoral green. They carried their colour palette from the dining room into the family room, painting the surrounding walls in Resene Eighth Truffle and ceiling and trim in Resene Alabaster. The Rockcote Clay decor fireplace supplied by Resene Construction Systems uses a strata effect with varying blends of Resene greys with a base of Resene Truffle to emulate layered earth. They finished the fireplace with Resene Concrete Clear to protect the surface. They used the colour they received in the give and take challenge, Resene Blue Chill, to create a colourful vase for the space.
The judges thought that Dylan & Keegan’s family room was full of heart and soul. Lauren thought the space was stunning and Ann-Louise loved the Resene Middle Earth feature wall. “This is delicious,” says Ann-Louise. “They’re tearing away from the minimalism, moving forward and daring to layer up different textures and colours and finishes.
“It’s just the right amount of cosy and sexy.”
Dylan & Keegan’s family room flows seamlessly into their elegant dining room with walls in Resene Eighth Truffle and ceiling and trim in Resene Alabaster.
Meg & Dan’s Family Room
Final Score: 26/30
Meg & Dan defined their family room with a modern screen and pops of green. They continued their use of Resene Black White on the walls, trim and ceiling.
Meg & Dan had their hands full this week creating both their family room and guest bedroom. The open plan nature of their kitchen, dining and living space lent itself well to Meg & Dan’s plans, which involved a modern glass screen and walls in Resene Black White. The couple continued the natural timber elements from their completed kitchen & dining room, incorporating an elegant green feature wall that popped against the Resene Black White ceiling. In the guest bedroom, Meg & Dan brought a touch of sophistication with hazy grey Resene Stack walls paired with Resene Black White on the ceiling. The couple layered Resene Rivergum, their give and take challenge colour, with Resene Black to create an imaginative coffee table piece for their room.
The judges all loved the colour palette and thought the overall richness of the materials in the family room balanced out the monochrome palette of the kitchen. Ann-Louise loved the team’s bravery in the family room. “See that’s bold, a bit of colour,” she says. “If you’re going to have a feature wall, that’s how you do it.”
Meg & Dan’s guest bedroom had a hint of old-style charm with Resene Stack walls highlighting the asymmetrical Resene Black White ceiling.
Connie & Rach’s Family Room
Final Score: 18/30
Connie & Rach continued the use of Resene Barely There in their family room this week, painting the walls, ceiling and trim in the sophisticated colour.
Connie & Rach got ambitious this week, creating an elegant guest bedroom in addition to their family room. The team’s family room was all about novelty, with a quirky staggered bookcase and glass floor bringing more light into the dining room below. They painted the walls, ceiling and trim of both the family room and guest bedroom in creamy Resene Barely There, creating a great flow between rooms. They painted chess pieces in Resene Gold Dust which they received during the give and take challenge.
The judges thought the glass floor was an interesting choice and that Connie & Rach had a more mature colour scheme for their family room, which worked well. Overall, they thought it was a nice comfortable space. “This is a cute little space,” says Chris, who liked the use of windows in both corners of the room. “You get that nice view shaft through the whole building.”
Connie & Rach used Resene Barely There on the walls, ceiling and trim to create an elegant guest bedroom.
Tim & Arthur’s Family Room
Final Score: 24/30
Resene Black White creates a crisp finish on the walls, ceiling and trim in Tim & Arthur’s modern family room.
Tim & Arthur continued their neutral colour scheme into the family room this week with Resene Black White walls, trim and ceiling. The white walls made the space feel larger, with floor to ceiling windows creating bold lines that the team mimicked in Tim’s cubist artwork that featured Resene Paddock. The creative use of Resene Paddock won the team the give and take challenge, earning them an extra point. Tim & Arthur brought a touch of nature to the room with pops of blue and green and sectioned off the room with a cavity slider.
The judges liked the functionality of the space, the practicality of the retro study nook and the team’s choice of artwork. “The colour scheme is gorgeous, I love that it’s understated,” says Lauren. “I’m feeling like it’s going to connect beautifully to the outside space.”
With Resene Black White as their hero colour, Tim & Arthur set out to create a relaxing family room with an extra office nook.
