From past to present: A 1906 home's transformation

In the Wellington suburb of Brooklyn, a 1906-character home has witnessed the evolution of eras. With time leaving its mark on this incredible dwelling, it was time for a refresh, and the gorgeous blue-green of Resene Cutty Sark was the perfect choice to breathe new life into this home.

With a bustling family of five at its core, the house required a holistic overhaul, including structural changes. And beyond the physical renovation, Wellington interior designer Charlotte Minty’s colour choices have transformed each space of this historical abode while also preserving its heritage. Harmony and functionality have been infused into every nook and cranny.

Realising that the kitchen was positioned wrongly at the edge of the home and facing west, it was promptly moved to a central location, basking in the embrace of morning and afternoon sun and becoming the heart of the home. This strategic shift not only enhanced the kitchen's functionality but also seamlessly integrated it with communal spaces like the dining room and breakfast nook.

Natural light became the guiding force behind the transformation. East-opening French doors with transom windows welcome sunshine, illuminating the revamped kitchen and adjoining areas. Structural modifications, including door relocations and wall enhancements, have helped to improve circulation and flow, fostering a sense of coherence throughout the house.

Central to the Charlotte Minty Interior Design (CMID) design philosophy is the careful selection of colour schemes, anchored by Resene paints. The clients' penchant for green found expression in Resene Cutty Sark, a muted yet refined hue that gracefully adorns the interiors. This choice, pairing well with an existing floral wallpaper, set the tone for a harmonious palette, where each shade plays a role in enhancing the home's character.

Resene White Pointer, a soft off-white neutral, complements the rich hues of rimu trims and doors, paying homage to the house's vintage charm. Every detail, from coat peg rails sprayed with Resene Apple Blossom to the front door enveloped in Resene Wild Rice, speaks volumes about CMID's meticulous attention to detail.

As the project unfolded, inspirations emerged. The admiration for Resene Cutty Sark prompted a spontaneous change in the living room's joinery unit, proving the transformative power of colour in shaping a space's ambiance.

This renovated home is a harmonious blend of heritage and modernity, a sanctuary where the past and present converges seamlessly. Through the skilled hands of CMID and the vibrant hues of Resene paints, a piece of Wellington's history has found new meaning, breathing fresh life into its timeless walls.
