Greys and blues transform a Sandringham bungalow into a sophisticated family home

Interior designer Jennifer Domett of Domett Design knows the power that colour has for connecting spaces. She recently pulled together a palette of shadowy Resene greys and blues to create a home that fulfilled her clients’ wish for colour and minimalism – and totally transformed its tired interior in the process.

The renovation started in January of this year but was understandably stalled in March due to lockdown. Homeowner Chris says, “the biggest hurdle was Covid, the most rewarding part was the team that created the vision, and the biggest decision was selling – and now I’m hoping that the next owners enjoy it as much as we did.”

The design vision he’s talking about was centred on tying spaces together and creating a more cohesive interior. Jennifer did this by employing the basic design principles of balance, proximity, alignment, repetition, contrast, space and function.

The original bungalow ceiling panelling in the second lounge was a starting point, and Jennifer used this as a repeated design on the living area walls to create a connection between the spaces. The panelling has also been repeated in the hallways, master bedroom and bathrooms for continuity.

Colour also plays an important role in the balance and harmony of this home. In the kitchen, the soft atmospheric hue of Resene Grey Seal graces the walls and is complemented with Resene Double Truffle and Resene Nero on the cabinets. Further pops of striking black are introduced in the dining chairs and echoed in the pair of French doors, which are painted in Resene Nero. This soft and contemporary cloud grey colour palette is continued into the living area where it is met with Resene Half Tuna on the panelled walls and beautiful dark dusty blue couches.

Jennifer has also cleverly echoed this colour palette into the bathrooms and bedrooms, without making it identical. One bedroom features the slightly dry cloudy grey-green of Resene Ravine, another bedroom harkens back to the kitchen and living with walls in Resene Grey Seal and the master bedroom heroes the commanding charcoal blue of Resene New Denim Blue on the panelled wall behind the bed.

The bathrooms feature Resene Quarter Alabaster on the walls, which has also been used for the ceiling throughout the home, and Resene Grey Seal on the battened panelled walls.

“The richness of Resene Half Tuna on the battened walls and the freshness of Resene Grey Seal work well in different functioning spaces, creating rhythm, repetition, contrast and form,” says Jennifer. “It was incredibly rewarding to see the colours bring the areas alive throughout the project and hear feedback from the recent open homes reflect this.

Top tip: For a seamless low sheen finish from living areas to wet areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, use Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen, then finish trims in Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel and ceilings in Resene SpaceCote Flat.

kitchen grey

Soft and warm, Resene Grey Seal features in the kitchen and living with Resene Quarter Alabaster on the ceiling and window trims. The kitchen cabinets below the bench are painted in Resene Double Truffle with Resene Nero on the wall cabinets – a colour that is echoed on the French doors and on the dining chairs.

living room panelled walls

Resene Grey Seal continues from the kitchen walls into the living room complemented by Resene Quarter Alabaster on the ceiling, window trims and skirting. The stormy grey of Resene Half Tuna features on the panelled wall on the left hand side of the room.

grey walls office

For continuity, Jennifer carried Resene Grey Seal through to the office with Resene Quarter Alabaster on the window trims, skirtings and ceiling. A feature wall in Resene Half Tuna defines the desk space.

blue bedroom panelling

In the master bedroom, Resene Grey Seal graces the walls with feature battened panelling in Resene New Demin Blue in place of a headboard. The ceiling, window trims and skirting are painted in Resene Quarter Alabaster.

soft green bedroom

Taking a slight departure from the smoky blues and greys is the soft green grey hue of Resene Ravine in the second bedroom. Jennifer used Resene Quarter Alabaster on the skirting boards to tie them in with the rest of the home.

neutral kids bedroom

In the third bedroom, Resene Grey Seal makes another appearance with Resene Quarter Alabaster on the ceiling, window trim and skirting. More colour is brought in through the blinds and bedding in playful colours similar to Resene Awol, Resene Cupid, Resene Glamour Puss and Resene Glorious.

bathroom panelling

Panelling features again in the bathroom in Resene Grey Seal. It’s paired with Resene Quarter Alabaster on the upper walls, ceiling and window trims.
