habitat Christmas décor series: The countdown is on!

It’s week four of our habitat Christmas décor series and with only 14 days to go now’s the time to add those final festive touches so you can sit back and enjoy the holiday season.

We’ve got some smaller DIY projects for you that you can get done in the nick of time So grab your favourite Resene testpot colours, a paintbrush, and let’s get Christmassy!

Christmas artwork to go with your décor scheme can be hard to find so why not make your own! We took an inexpensive round canvas from Warehouse Stationery and painted it in Resene Halcyon – you can paint yours in whatever colour you choose to complement, or contrast, with your colour scheme. We then took a fine paintbrush and painted the words Have a holly jolly Christmas onto it in Resene Half Rice Cake. To finish, we painted a fun wiggly line around the canvas and glued a cute velvet bow on. This is a great last minute festive touch to any household!

Here's another take on a Christmas DIY artwork, one that proves you don’t have to follow the traditional green and red scheme. We took another round canvas from Warehouse Stationery and painted it in the blushing Resene Dust Storm. We then took some wooden letters from Look Sharp and painted those in Resene Kaitoke Green and painted a small wooden tree in Resene Putty. Once everything is painted, you can glue it all onto the canvas with a hot glue gun.

Time to wrap those presents! Or, you can use these boxes like we have, which can also be reused (and repainted) the next year to create less waste. Our present boxes are painted to match our room’s palette in Resene Drought, Resene Cement, Resene Tobacco Brown, Resene Double Drought, Resene Half Drought and Resene Half Blanc. We also added some cute ribbons and tags with decorative elements such as wooden reindeers and bells for an extra festive touch.

If you love personalised items, then why not have a go at painting your own santa sacks for your loved ones this year. We took a plain calico bag/stocking from Kmart and drew in pencil the letters ‘LILY’. We then took a fine paintbrush and painted over the letters in Resene Bermuda Grey. We glued a cute blue velvet bow on the sack to go with the theme. You can be as decorative as you like with this one!

If you like a minimal, neutral aesthetic, that’s still ok. You don’t have to have sparkling gold tinsel or bold decorations to create a festive vibe. In this space, we’ve added the smallest touches through these little Christmas houses that blend perfectly with our room in Resene Rice Cake and Resene Drought. You can find simple decorations at many stores, or even a second-hand store, and choose your favourite Resene neutral testpots or Resene Colorwood stains to make them your own.

We hope our habitat Christmas series has brought you plenty of inspiration to enjoy this joyful season with loved ones and in your own home.
