Hallway heaven
The entrance and hallway are part of those areas in the home that often get overlooked, even though they see most of the thoroughfare. It got us thinking: why not give the humble hallway a makeover?
We asked stylist Gem Adams to create a heavenly hallway using Resene colour... one that wouldn't take too much time to make ourselves at home but still has the wow factor.
In a few photographs, she's introduced us to all sorts of ideas, from simple stencilling on the walls to layering the hallway with unexpected colour.
Why we love this
- Green is the colour of the year and it's great to see it being used here to give pops of colour – from Resene Permanent Green painted onto the sideboard and a few of the picture frames, to a cascading potted plant on the floating shelf.
- It's hard to pin down a theme for this colour combo – slightly rustic, hints of sea greens, and a nod to French Country – but it really works. It's indicative of how colour is being used this year, being more complex than ever before.
- It utilises the space well, with a coat rack, slim benches and shelves and tall baskets for additional storage and hanging space in the home.
- Gem's also seen an opportunity to introduce colour through these pieces of furniture, including them in the soft grey/green colour scheme.
- The tongue and groove walls are painted in Resene Quarter Stack next to the other walls painted in full strength Resene Stack. It gives a beautiful and subtle play on light and texture.
- Stencilling doesn't have to be ornate to make an impact. By layering two colours that contrast nicely, in this case Resene Quarter Merino on top of Resene Stack, a straightforward outline can really stand out.
- Something as simple as staining the floor can do wonders to lift the look of your hallway. Gem chose a simple wash of Resene Colorwood Whitewash for this setting, and the lighter look of the flooring certainly gives the illusion of it being a wider space.

From humble to heavenly, stylist Gem Adams has transformed this hallway space into something special. She's used a colour combo of Resene Quarter Stack on the walls, Resene Quarter Merino for the stencil and Resene Colorwood Whitewash on the floors.

Work with what you've got. If your hallway has smooth walls, add texture by stencilling a pattern... it can be as simple as this one painted in Resene Quarter Merino against grey Resene Stack walls. And it's the perfect place to put up framed pictures.
We love the other painted details, such as the coat rack in Resene Cascade, bench in Resene Dusted Blue and vase in Resene Mountain Mist.

For something low key, a shelf is great for adding greenery and framed pictures (points of interest) to hallways. Get the look with walls painted in Resene Quarter Stack, shelf painted in Resene Stack and vase painted in Resene Spark.
