Hamptons with a country twist: This serene new build glows with touches of Resene Foggy Grey and Resene Robin Egg Blue
The Hamptons are a long way from Canterbury - 15,000km away to be precise – but homeowners Nick and Sarah combined the best of both and gave the classic coastal look a country twist when they built their family home in rural Canterbury. Inspired by the breezy classic American look, the couple created the perfect neutral colour palette including Resene Robin Egg Blue and Resene Foggy Grey from the Karen Walker Paints collection and Resene Double White Pointer.
“After our previous home, we were drawn to the idea of building and starting with a blank canvas,” says Sarah. “Our inspiration for our home was a rural modern take on the Hamptons style.
“We wanted the benefits of a modern home, but for the home to have character and soul and not feel stark.”
Their new home is the perfect home base for the modern family within. Nick is an airline pilot and Sarah owns her own floral design business, Mama Bloom, and her home features in many of the backdrops for her beautiful blooms. Their young son Charlie and Wilson the wire-haired fox terrier keep the couple on their toes.
Nick and Sarah worked with Build7 Christchurch and interior designer Hayley Morris to create a cohesive colour scheme and bring their dream home to life. They enjoyed the experience so much that they now work as sales partners for Build7.
Build7 uses Resene products for all their new builds and Sarah was keen to do the same. “We have used Resene paint previously and found it to be superior to the other products we have used.”
Light, bright, and sophisticated, Sarah and Nick chose Resene Double White Pointer for their kitchen, dining room, bathrooms, guest room, and open plan living space. They used Resene Rice Cake, a sharp white with a hint of yellow, for the ceilings and trim. “We knew we wanted the interiors to feel bright but wanted to avoid using a stark white so chose Resene Double White Pointer for all the main space,” says Sarah. “We love all of the spaces, but our open plan living, kitchen and dining area is probably our favourite.
“It’s where we spend most of our time as a family and we love how it flows.”
The couple achieved an airy, refreshing feel in the second lounge, where they painted their walls in Resene Foggy Grey from the Karen Walker Paints collection with a ceiling and trim in Resene Rice Cake. The darker tone of Resene Foggy Grey highlighted the home’s pitched ceilings.
Sarah carried the simplistic and elegant atmosphere of the lounge into the master bedroom, where she painted the walls stone grey in Resene Half Foggy Grey from the Karen Walker Paints collection. “We wanted to create different moods in different areas of the home which is why we chose Resene Foggy Grey in the separate lounge and Resene Half Foggy Grey in the master bedroom to create a cosier feel,” says Sarah.
When describing their interior style, two words come to mind for Sarah and Nick: elegant and modern. “We like pieces that strike the balance between having character but are also modern and not too rustic,” says Sarah, who has an eclectic mix of modern Scandi and vintage furniture. “We also like pieces that have a story to them.
“A number of pieces of our furniture were made by my father, including our coffee table and Charlie’s cot.”
In the nursery, Charlie’s delicately fashioned cot is complemented by crisp Resene Rice Cake on the ceiling, trim and board and batten panelling. The wall above the panelling is in Resene Robin Egg Blue from the Karen Walker Paints collection, a pebble grey with a splash of Hamptons dusty blue.
Outside, Nick and Sarah’s home is a striking vision amongst the farmlands. Painted in Resene Half Delta with window trims in Resene Half Sea Fog, the home is a perfect balance of stylish and neat, with a hint of summer vibes. “Resene Sea Fog is one of our favourite colours,” says Sarah. Resene Sea Fog is white with a hint of grey that works well with muted colours. “We’ve used it in our last two homes and it is our go to white.”
After hundreds of hours on Pinterest and two years planning the build, the family are finally settled into their forever home. “We took our time and didn’t rush things,” says Sarah. “We spent time doing everything from researching building companies to refining the style of our home and are so glad we invested this time up front planning our project.
“We didn’t really have any challenges. I think investing in a great team helped us to avoid this.
“We are so happy with every aspect of our home. From start to finish, the Build7 team were amazing to work with and helped us bring our vision to life.”

Top tip: If you’re painting the trim or skirting boards of a lounge or playroom, use two coats of Resene Enamacryl waterborne gloss. Resene Enamacryl waterborne gloss provides a high gloss finish that reflects light. It is also hardwearing and easy to clean, so is perfect for high use areas.
A cosy nook in the entranceway provides the perfect place for the family’s dog Wilson to gaze out at the surrounding countryside. The walls are in Resene Double White Pointer and the ceiling and trim are in Resene Rice Cake.
The open plan kitchen, living and dining area create a haven of light and flow beautifully thanks to the calming Resene Double White Pointer on the walls and crisp Resene Rice Cake on the ceiling.
Sarah uses the Resene Double White Pointer walls in her dining room as a backdrop for photos of her beautiful blooms for her dried flower business Mama Bloom.
Sarah and Nick captured a warm and comforting atmosphere in the second lounge with rich Resene Foggy Grey from the Karen Walker Paints collection on the walls. The ceiling and trim provide a crisp outline in Resene Rice Cake.
Sarah and Charlie snuggle up in the second lounge which has a relaxing comfortable atmosphere thanks to its soft off-white furnishings and neutral colour palette of Resene paints. The walls in Resene Foggy Grey from the Karen Walker Paints collection and trims in Resene Rice Cake complement one of Sarah’s dried floral wreaths.
The master bedroom was given a moody makeover with Resene Half Foggy Grey from the Karen Walker Paints collection. It provides a midground to the couple’s black and white furniture and complements the ceiling and trim in Resene Rice Cake.
Charlie’s nursery glows with Resene Rice Cake on the board and batten panelling and ceiling. The upper walls in Resene Robin Egg Blue from the Karen Walker Paints collection give the space a serene feel and highlight the earthy décor.
The guest bedroom continues the flow from the open plan living space, with Resene Double White Pointer on the walls and Resene Rice Cake on the ceiling and trim. Within a smaller space, Resene Double White Pointer provides a cosy feel that embraces Sarah’s wooden furniture.
Sarah and Nick went for a minimalist approach in the bathroom. The bathroom features are highlighted by the walls in Resene Double White Pointer and ceiling in Resene Rice Cake.
The exterior of the family’s home embraces the elegant style of the Hamptons with weatherboards in Resene Half Delta and window trim in Resene Half Sea Fog. The sloping roof is COLORSTEEL® Sandstone Grey.
