Harmony in neutrals: A modern sanctuary in Christchurch
Part of a new development in Christchurch, this new build is a charming, light-filled gem painted in timeless Resene neutrals. The mix of various whites and neutrals with earthy tones in décor and timber features creates a harmonious and inviting atmosphere, blending seamlessly with the surrounding natural landscape while infusing the space with warmth and character.
The colour palette and interior architecture, designed by Patrick Lam of Upper Studio, reflects the initial design philosophy – retreat and reset. Within a world that seems to move at an ever-increasing pace, Patrick’s aim was to create a space that encourages the new homeowners to unplug, be present and find comfort in their surroundings.
The open-plan kitchen, dining and living features Resene Quarter Rice Cake painted on walls, ceiling and trims, Wood-X Mount Honey from Resene ColorShops on cedar battens and earthy, mustard toned décor to complement.

Alongside the large floor to ceiling windows, the white hues in this home create a sense of spaciousness, making the rooms feel large and inviting. The neutral backdrop also meant the homeowners can incorporate their own personal style and décor into each space.
“The interior exudes a sense of elegance and sophistication,” Patrick says. “The neutral palette creates a canvas for its residents to personalise their space, while providing a timeless aesthetics that will stand the test of time.”
At the heart of the colour scheme is Resene Quarter Rice Cake, a soothing hue that resonates with the warmth of the natural environment. Complementing this shade are various other neutrals such as Resene Half Truffle, a delicious beige, Resene Eighth Truffle, a gentle milky mushroom hue, and Resene Double White, all of which complement the warmth of Wood-X Mount Honey gracing the cedar battens and features.
The master bedroom is adorned with Resene Eighth Truffle on walls and Resene Quarter Rice Cake on ceiling and trims.
Floor to ceiling windows elongate the upstairs hall, made bright and open with Resene Quarter Rice Cake painted on walls and trims.
“Built with a focus on catering to the needs of a modern family, this home is meticulously designed to create a haven for its residents and also a longed-for addition to the suburb,” says Patrick.
The exterior is modern and sleek, and a great example of some most loved exterior Resene colours. The clean, crisp lines of Resene Double Sea Fog on plaster cladding and soffits with the dark Resene Element on weatherboards and Wood-X Mount Honey on cedar cladding is a mix that will stay current and appealing for many years to come.

There is a reason why Resene's top 20 colours are all whites and neutrals – their versatility! Patrick’s design shows us how using various shades, and strengths, of whites and neutrals can result in a timeless and charming space that will appeal to so many.
In the midst of the hustle and bustle of modern life, this home is a reminder that sometimes, the greatest luxury of all is simply the opportunity to pause, breathe and find peace within our own four walls.

Top tip: If you’re thinking of using white for your home, be sure to order Resene testpots or Resene A4 drawdown paint swatches so you can see what each shade looks like on your walls throughout the day. Another great tip is when you are comparing your whites and are finding it difficult to see the undertones, place a piece of white printer paper underneath each swatch. This will help your eyes to see the undertone in each Resene paint colour.
