Heather goes coastal cool
Imagine the dream Kiwi bach… chances are it would closely resemble this Coromandel Peninsula beauty.
The four-bedroom holiday home was styled by Heather Kirkwood, who went for a coastal cool look – with Resene Colorwood Whitewash on the plywood interior throughout, as well as accents of beachy Resene colours to reference the mid-century New Zealand bach.
The colour scheme fits perfectly with the home's spectacular views, sun-filled living area and healthy crop of surrounding native trees. (And it even has a basement built specially to house the boat.)
Heather tells us more about the design.
What was the client’s brief and how do your design and colour choices respond to that?
The style and interior of the house was to complement the concept developed by Alignworks Architects. The interior walls and ceiling are ply finished with Resene Colorwood Whitewash and the client wanted some colour accents that suited the beachy feel. Paint wise, we used Resene Half Smalt Blue and Resene Moonbeam for this.
What was your overall design philosophy?
We wanted the interior to flow and acknowledge the surroundings of the house; to reflect the relationship to the sea, sand, hills and eucalyptus tree at the entry. Details in the kitchen and accents throughout reference the nostalgia of the New Zealand mid-century batch.
What part of the design are you happiest with?
The colour accents have worked well in adding interest but maintaining the simplicity of holiday living. Colours flow to the lights, pieces of furniture and bedroom window treatments.
What was the biggest design challenge for this project?
To make sure that furniture fitted and maximised the living room space.
Is there anyone else you would like mentioned?
I worked with Rob and Jennie at Alignworks Architects, as well as Stanley Builders who specialise in prefabricated modular building
