Host a mid-winter Christmas party with these budget-friendly ideas

As the winter solstice shrouds our view of warmer months, it's time to embrace the chilly weather and the festive spirit of the season. One way to do that is by celebrating and hosting a mid-winter Christmas party! This is a time to gather with loved ones, enjoy comfort food, and decorate your home with fun and inviting decor. You’ll love these mid-winter Christmas ideas and with a touch of Resene paint colours you can transform your home into a warm and welcoming winter wonderland!

From rustic and traditional to modern and elegant, there's something here for everyone - and you’ll be surprised what you can do with some Resene testpots of your favourite festive colours.

Table settings four ways

Mid-winter Christmas parties often consist of sitting around the table, eating comfort food, telling stories and playing games, so your table settings are an important touch to the event. Check out these four easy table setting ideas to add that extra magical touch for your guests.

These cookie cutter napkins are simple and stunning and can suit any table set up. All you need are some white cotton napkins, a Christmas tree cookie cutter and a testpot of Resene Holly. If you’ve already decided on your colour palette and décor, you can match these napkins to any theme you have going by choosing any shape cookie cutter you want and any Resene paint colour to match your colour theme. These are sure to be a hit, and you can reuse them again and again.

Tip: when painting cotton, make sure the napkin is completely dry. Wash separately gently to help the napkins to last longer.

Get creative and make your own coasters to match your table setting. Take some inexpensive MDF coasters, paint half of them in your chosen Resene paint colour and the other half in another shade – we used Resene Half Thorndon Cream and Resene Pohutukawa (which also matches our table).

Draw or print out some Christmas shapes, words and letters and draw the shapes onto adhesive sticker in pen. Cut out the shapes and stick them to the coasters. Lastly, paint the red coasters in white paint and the white coasters in red paint. Once dry, peel the sticker away to reveal your shape. If red is not your thing, try shades like Resene Crusoe, an eclectic green, Resene Tranquil, a bright snowy blue, or Resene Alamo, a golden hued beige.

A simple palette of white and gold is an elegant and classy choice – and a great one for a mid-winter Christmas where you want some stylish touches without going full-on Santa’s workshop! These painted pinecones are great for holding name cards or little cards, making them a personal touch for each guest. Our pinecones are painted in Resene FX Metallic Gold and table in Resene Black White. If you’re wanting a classy look like this, you could try other shimmering shades from the Resene FX Metallic range like Resene Bullion, Resene Rose Gold or Resene Spark.

A blue colour palette could be reminiscent of the beach, the chilly snow-covered North Pole, or just the fact that it is winter outside! Whatever your theme, these crisp blues are absolutely gorgeous and make for a stunning table setting. The added touch of a painted shell with guest’s names will make the setting even more special. Our place mat and personalised shell are painted in Resene Teal Blue with lettering on the shell in Resene White. If you’re after darker blues, try Resene Blue Night and Resene Surfs Up, or lighter pastel blues like Resene Time Out or Resene Sail

Alternative tree ideas

When we celebrate mid-winter Christmas, we often don’t set up a whole Christmas Tree as we would in December – mainly because the tree farm is closed, or our plastic tree is tucked away in the attic and once a year is enough to heave that out and set it up! Here are some ideas that are quick and cheap and will still be delightfully appreciated on your mid-winter Christmas morning!

Timber tannenbaum

You will need:

  • Pine lengths ( ours were 20cm in length, 40cm, 60cm, 80cm and 1mtr and 9cm wide and 10mm thick)
  • Small nails or picture hook nails
  • Hammer
  • Tree decorations
  • Pencil
  • Star (optional)
  • Testpot brushes
  • Resene testpots in paint colours of your choice. We used Resene Pale Leaf, Resene Peace, Resene Envy, Resene Laurel and Resene Gondwana.

Step 1:Take your pine wood and either cut the lengths (to above) or get them cut by your timber supplier.

Step 2: Paint each of your pine lengths in a different Resene paint colour of your choice. Two coats are best. We painted ours in (from top to bottom) Resene Pale leaf, Resene Peace, Resene Envy, Resene Laurel and Resene Gondwana. The star is optional but we painted ours in Resene Gondwana.

Step 3:Measure where you want to put the nails on your wood lengths and place a small pencil mark. We came in 10cm from each end of the pine and then 20cm in between each nail.Either use small nails or picture hooks nails to nail into pine at the spacing you have measured.

Step 4:Hang your lengths on wall with 3M Strips or flat picture hanging hooks.

Step 5:Once the pine strips are on the wall hang your decorations onto the nails.

Blue Claus

You will need:

  • One sheet of Ply X
  • Jig saw, circular saw or table saw
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint roller and tray
  • Papier mache Xmas baubles and star
  • Small nails
  • Hammer
  • Resene testpots in colours of your choice. We used Resene Oxygen and Resene Biscay

Step 1: Measure to find the middle point at the top of your sheet of plywood and mark it with a pencil.

Step 2: Using a long ruler and starting at the bottom corner of the ply sheet, draw a pencil line up to meet the midpoint of the board and repeat on the other side.

Step 3: Using a jig saw, circular saw or table saw, cut the excess wood off the sides to reveal your triangle. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.

Step 4: Paint two coats of your chosen colour, we used Resene Oxygen, onto the triangle board, allowing adequate drying time in between.

Step 5: Using testpots in your other chosen colours, we used Resene Oxygen and Resene Biscay, paint your papier mache baubles and a star topper with two coats of paint, allowing adequate drying time in between.

Step 6: Hammer small nails into the board at random places on the tree and hang your decorations off them.

The fir's wooden cousin

This is a quick 10 minute fix if you’ve realised your guests are on the way and you don’t have a tree. Simply get a branch from your backyard, pop it in a vase and hang some of your Christmas decorations to spruce it up. The key is adding touches of festive shades, like our wall painted in Resene Merlot. For other Christmassy colours, try deep red like Resene Salsa, a lively green like Resene Green House, or a glittering gold like Resene Gold Dust from the Resene FX Metallic paint range.

Small but jolly touches

Small touches are everything when you’re hosting your mid-winter Christmas party and can make your guests feel special from the moment they walk in the door! From small gifts to cheerful wall art, check out these ideas that won’t cost a fortune or take hours to set up.

Make your own treat pot for friends and family. For ours we used a jolly red, Resene Red Berry, and Resene White for the rim. If you don’t want to make a Santa themed pot, you could try a snowman using Resene Alabaster and Resene Pizazz for the nose, or a reindeer using Resene Saddle Brown and Resene Bright red for the nose. All you need are some Resene testpots in paint colours of your choice, a terracotta pot, glue, buttons, and some delicious treats to go inside.

No need for red, green, and gold here, this Scandi style living room shows off some neutral tones and subtle Christmas décor. This chic design could stay on your wall all year round, or you can create your own patterns by simply painting other leftover wood you have lying around in the garage, or repainting these ones.

You will need:

  • 3 pieces pine 13.5x60x0.9
  • Resene Colorwood in Resene Bask
  • Resene testpot in a colour of your choice for the pattern, we used Resene Rice Cake
  • Fine paintbrushes
  • Clear craft glue
  • 3 flat hanging hooks

Step 1: Using a rag, rub Resene Colorwood onto the pieces of pine. One coat should be enough.  Allow to dry.

Step 2: Either freehand to paint or draw your design onto the boards in light pencil ready for painting. Use our images as a guide or create your own designs. Paint your design in your chosen Resene colour.  Vanessa used Resene Rice Cake.

Step 3: Glue the flat hanging hooks on the back of each panel ready to hang. Sit back and enjoy your art!

A budget friendly way to wrap gifts – make your own! This DIY cookie cutter wrapping paper is easy and fun to make. All you need is some plain paper or craft paper, a cookie cutter in a Christmas shape, and some Resene testpots in paint colours of your choice – we used Resene Holly. You could use your family’s favourite colours and make each one personal, or try some bright and unique shades like Resene Bowie, and electric blue, Resene Tree Frog, a bright tropical green, or Resene Boogie Wonderland, a whimsical violet.

Whatever your plans, Resene has the paints to help you transform your mid-winter Christmas party into a budget-friendly and enchanting celebration that will make your guests feel truly special.
