Interior designer Holly’s deep love for colour is clear looking at her front door

A bold Resene Galliano yellow door greets roadside passers-by at Holly and Brett’s home in Taupō, and hints at playful colour use inside. The couple signed on the dotted line for their home just under a year ago, after falling in love with its retro charm and quirks. Despite its “horrendous beige” walls, the pair saw potential for dramatic transformation.

“Taupō is typically a summer bach town filled with quirky mono-pitch roofed homes, so I wanted to really play that up and create a bold, classic retro holiday home feel,” says Holly. Hues like Resene Raindance and Resene Rose Of Sharon have added bags of character.

The home was in serious need of attention, but thankfully it landed in good hands – Holly is an interior designer and Brett is an upholsterer (owner of Coverup Upholstery).

“I designed this home interior around my collection of furniture and art that I’ve acquired over the years. Having a background in upholstery most of our furniture, soft furnishings, lampshades are designed and made by myself and Brett, so it’s fun showcasing some and enjoying them at home.”Holly says she recommends painting a few A3 sheets with Resene testpots and hanging them around a room, next to furniture or exterior cladding in different lighting conditions. This will give a true representation of each colour. “It took me about eight different samples to pick my exterior blue, Resene Raindance, which changes depending on what time of the year it is and what the weather is doing outside, I love it! It’s super moody in winter and coastal bliss on a hot sunny day.”

The home is charming with Resene Raindance on its exterior, contrasted with a bright yellow door in cheerful Resene Galliano . She even painted an appropriately coastal life ring on the door in Resene Poppy and Resene Half Black White. “I’m totally in love with the exterior colour palette paired with our striped fruit shop inspired blinds I designed (and made by the wizard himself Brett). I can’t wait for summer so we can actually enjoy it properly. It definitely brightens up the neighbourhood in the sea of white, black and beige home.”

Holly says describing her interior design style is a tough one, but she considers herself a bit of a mix master and loves designing spaces with plenty of different design elements and style references. “I think that’s what’s key in creating a timeless space,” she says.

Inside, the couple’s lounge is equally as charming as its exterior in Resene Half Kumutoto, a soft and breezy blue. It’s the perfect backdrop for their funky pink velvet sofa, and furnishings dried giant tussock grasses of toetoe. Resene White on the ceiling offers crisp contrast. A stunning hand-painted stripe mural in the living area is the perfect example of what you can do with a little creativity and Resene testpots. Resene Rose Of Sharon, Resene Laser, Resene Poppy and Resene Ashanti form an Art Deco-esque feature.

Resene Half Kumutoto continues across the walls in the couple’s kitchen, with cupboards painted in Resene SpaceCote Flat White. “They were originally a horrible beige! It’s amazing what some new paint and new handles can do.” The home office and hallway are soft and creamy in Resene Half Bianca.

Holly says her favourite room changes every week, but her pick is the lounge. “My overall favourite spot is definitely lazing in our lounge on the pink velvet couch, the fire cranking in the background with a glass of wine. All my best ideas happen while sitting there.”

They acquired plenty of learnings along the way in their renovating process. “We’re always learning a faster or better way to do things. I really enjoyed tiling the kitchen ourselves and am looking forward to doing more in the bathroom. Also the day I discovered ‘gap filler’ was an amazing day, it makes your paint finishes that much better!”

Holly advises other home renovators not to be afraid of colour. “I have a deep love for colour and I’m constantly discovering a new favourite with every project.

Definitely don’t be afraid to use colour, paint is one of the most affordable and effective ways to transform a space quickly. Also don’t be afraid to play around with different paint finishes, gloss up that front door!”

Top tip: Nothing says welcome home quite like a brightly coloured front door. In fact, of all the areas in your home, your front door has the maximum impact per square centimetre and – best of all – you can paint it in an afternoon. Use a high gloss finish, such as Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne enamel, to make your front door colour pop like Holly and Brett’s.

The home is cute and charming with weatherboards painted in Resene Raindance, trims in Resene Half Black White, floor and roof/gutters in Resene Half Tuna, door in Resene Galliano, life ring in Resene Poppy and Resene Half Black White. We are also hoping to get a deck in before summer, DIY of course!”

The home office and hallway are soft in Resene Half Bianca. “My favourite Resene colour really depends on the light available in a space and what it’s being paired with to become a winner for me. Despite my bold choices in some places, I really enjoy using different Resene whites to soften and offset the mayhem. Resene Half Bianca is a current favourite.”
