Janice and Jeffrey's dazzling lakeside reno

When Janice and Jeffrey Clague purchased a very dated villa on the hills above Queenstown, they got stuck in immediately, setting upon a complete renovation.

Out went the passé fireplace and poorly laid out kitchen, in went the open plan living area and modern detailing. The whole house was given a new paint palette, with soft Resene greys, and punchy Resene Scarlet Gum for the kitchen and splashback.

From beastly to beauty, the villa is aptly named Papillon – French for butterfly. To honour its name, the couple had an ornate custom rug made for the entrance, greeting guests as they arrive to the glamorous home.

Janice tells us more.

What part of the renovation are you most pleased with?

The main living area... after ripping up the tiled floor and taking out the heavy schist fireplace, and putting in a completely new kitchen.

The French pale oak floor and the completely redesigned fireplace lifted the whole room and made me feel bold enough to put some seriously punchy colour into the kitchen.

We are also extremely pleased with the renovation of the media room.

How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors?

I really had the desire to create a kitchen with a strong statement colour, Resene Scarlet Gum. This led to choosing very soft grey fabrics and leather in the furniture, pale oak floor and a creamy/grey tiling for the redesigned fireplace.

The villa's name is Papillon, and it felt appropriate to complement this with a custom designed rug. This took a great deal of time and effort to get the right shading in the wings, etc. to give it life – well worth the wait though.

Do you have any advice for renovators?

Obviously get the basics right first. We had serious problems with the ceiling in the living area having damp issues, which required some major work on the balcony area upstairs.

Do you have a favourite decorating colour?

I love soft greys, which Resene are excellent at creating. I love to start with grey because it gives me a huge jumping off point for pretty much any other colour.

Janice and Jeffrey chose Resene Double Sea Fog for the main living area, and Resene Alabaster for the ceiling. The colours give a soft contrast to the kitchen area painted in Resene Scarlet Gum.

The walls, painted in Resene Double Sea Fog, also complement the soft greys of the Italian leather furniture and white glass table. The kitchen is painted in Resene Scarlet Gum.

Janice wanted a really punchy colour in the kitchen, on the walls, splashback and island, choosing Resene Scarlet Gum for the purple. The cabinetry is painted in Resene Stack and the ceiling is painted in Resene Alabaster.

The media room used to be a clinical white space with no feature. Janice and Jeffrey used a textured wallpaper, Resene Wallpaper Collection 422696 available from Resene ColorShops, to give the room a warm, cosy feel. They also put in a chair rail, painted in Resene Half Malta and Resene Nero, which brings out the black frames of the Hollywood prints.

Sitting on the hills above Queenstown, the bedrooms have magical views. The walls are painted in Resene Double Sea Fog.

Janice designed, in collaboration with Artisan carpets, a huge butterfly rug using art silks and wool.
