Kate adds magic to this beach bungalow
With sweeping views above the tree tops, and sitting privately between a park and the beach, there was inspiration aplenty for Kate Alexander when asked to update this character bungalow to ready it for sale.
Home to one family for 25 years, it was renovated when the kids became teenagers to create a whole floor dedicated to easy living – three big bedrooms, two bathrooms and a giant living area opening out to a pool and spa.
To further update it, Kate chose warm Resene whites and deep Resene greens inspired by the home's surroundings, with exposed wood to keep the home's character. The finished look is relaxed and beachy, with a modern edge.
Kate tells us more.
What was the client’s brief and how do your design and colour choices respond to that?
The owners have lived and loved this house for many years but with all the kids gone, it was time to downsize. Their brief to me was to get the house ready for sale – a mini-modernisation in keeping with the character of the home. They were amazing clients with full trust. Together we chose colours that have broad appeal without being boring. We wanted to show off the home's best features while still retaining opportunity for new owners to add further value.
What was your overall design philosophy?
This house really feels like it is in the tropical treetops, so a green based colour scheme was an obvious choice. It is opposite a beach and has its own pool so a relaxed beach vibe was the natural direction in terms of style.
What Resene colours and products were used, and what inspired those choices?
For the interior, I chose a white that fits naturally with the exposed wood and polished floors... something with depth and not too stark. The walls are painted in Resene Double White Pointer, with trims painted in Resene Half White Pointer.
Resene Double White Pointer was also used for the weatherboards outside, using Resene Alabaster as a contrasting white for the trims.
I chose Resene Karaka for the roof colour, a nod to the surrounding greenery. The gate, front door and garage door are painted in the modern grey-green Resene Viktor.
What part of the design are you most happy with?
I love the kitchen. It was a simple makeover that makes a huge difference. We painted the cupboard doors and replaced the handles – painting the whole space in the same colour makes it feel as large as it truly is. The bench has a modern square edge to it and bounces the natural light that streams in through the vast windows. Beachy, white cane lampshades finish off the look.
What was the biggest design challenge for this project?
Keeping a balance between being neutral but interesting, and having a modern look with character.
Is there anyone else you would like mentioned?
We used painters Kingdom Decorators and gardeners Muddy Wellies Landscaping
