Kathy’s crew go bright and breezy
Light, bright and breezy with a subtle palette of Resene colours, the Wardlaw house from TVNZ’s Our First Home is a relaxing place to be. Mick and Kathy Wardlaw teamed up with son Tim and his girlfriend Robyn Marks to work on the house. Kathy tells us about the decorative choices she and her family made:
How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors? What was your overall philosophy?
Our house had elements of Cape Cod design and so we decided to recreate a modern version, keeping the colours and design subtle and simple. We wanted to open up the living spaces and create easy flow. The finished result is a light, bright and airy, spacious family home that we are very proud of!
What inspired your paint colour and accessory colour choices?
Mick and I were adamant that the terracotta roof was staying and so the paint colour choices started with the exterior of the house. Once Tim and Robyn had chosen a couple of pieces of furniture… there was our colour palette for the inside!
What part of the house are you most happy with?
I think the four of us would say the open-plan kitchen and living area, the main bathroom and the upstairs living space. Can I go on?
What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?
Research ideas, consider your colour palette first and go about setting the scene.
What was the biggest decorating or renovating challenge for this project?
Keeping design cohesion throughout as we developed the renovation on a room by room basis, with all four of us across two generations wanting input!
Do you have a favourite colour, and if so why is it your favourite?
Personally, I love the colour red, for its vibrancy and energy.
After spending 10 weeks renovating the Te Atatu South, Auckland, home for TVNZ’s Our First Home, the Wardlaws sold the property for $898,000, adding 34.14% of value. Resene paints were used throughout the home.

A crisp fresh colour scheme based on Resene Sea Fog certainly gives the kitchen and dining area a bright and breezy feel.

A girl’s room is kept gender neutral with Resene Triple Sea Fog walls, Resene Alabaster trims and a canary yellow trim on the repurposed shutter headboard.

A custom-designed shelving unit has a rear wall of Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue and sits behind the sofa in the upstairs living area. The walls here are painted in Resene Alabaster.

Touches of blue in the furnishings and accessories enforce the family’s vision of a Cape Cod interior. The walls are in Resene Sea Fog.

Rich navy Resene Regatta is a striking feature wall in the main bedroom.

A curvaceous freestanding bath is a centrepiece of the bathroom.

Weatherboards painted in Resene Trojan are a smart backdrop to the generous outdoor living area. The window sills are picked out in Resene Baltic Sea with the window frames in Resene Black White.
