Kelly brings the Hamptons home
It’s hard to believe that this home was once filled with shag pile carpet and salmon-coloured bathroom fittings. Today, it’s a serene and beautiful retreat sporting a dreamy palette of Resene blue paint colours.
The tired 1980s house didn’t really faze designer Kelly Gammie of Eucalyptus Design, but owners Tim and Helen McGuire’s brief did evoke both excitement and a bit of fear: “A Hamptons-style home and, of course, we’d like a Kiwi twist.”
The Hamptons style of decorating transfers well to Kiwi situations. For a start, it’s inspired by the sea and sand of Long Island, New York. And we are a nation with close links to the sea.
It’s fresh and light, with a good measure of casual character, and makes good use of soft blues and antiqued whites.
Kelly tells us more:
How did you develop the colour scheme?
The muted blues of the Waitemata Harbour in the morning were definitely a major influence on this project’s colour palette. We wanted to replicate the feeling of being enveloped in subtle colour as opposed to being overwhelmed by brash hue.
You have used six different soft blues and greys – how did you control a palette with so many similar colours?
A by-the-sea colourway was essential to give the home a sophisticated Kiwi flavour. Shades of beautiful Resene blues - Resene Emerge, Resene Periglacial Blue, Resene Nebula - are very much a feature though they are discovered gradually rather than being instantly apparent.
Glimpses of Resene Half Duck Egg Blue in the kitchen and dining areas can be seen from the entrance hall.
Resene Triple Sea Fog adds a little formality to the walls of main living area and continues the gentle evolution of colour.
Other elements support the muted colour palette: the kitchen tiling, sisal style woollen carpet, wallpaper and furnishings.
What other interior elements were important to the look?
It was important to create impact and depth by introducing a solid timber floor. Wide American Oak boards were installed and stained in Resene Colorwood Walnut to provide an appropriate Hampshire-esque base to work from.
New panelled walls were introduced in the entranceway and taken through into the powder room and bathrooms. Resene Quarter Sea Fog is crisp yet not clinical on the new timber wall panels. Resene Lumbersider (often used as an exterior paint) was a perfect solution for the panelling as it gave a contemporary low sheen finish and provides protection in this high traffic zone.
Some doors have a beading detail for a panelled effect, and are painted in warm grey Resene Delta for a contemporary twist. The two-storey entrance hall has 10 doors leading off to sleeping and living areas or cupboards!
Any doors that led into another room were painted Resene Delta but those with storage behind were painted the same colour as the panelled walls, Resene Quarter Sea Fog
What did you most enjoy about this project?
It was a lovely change to work on a project that presented no real challenges other than making an old house look fresh and contemporary.
It was a joy to work with clients who had a strong vision, but who also had faith in my professional ability and trusted me when I pushed them out of their comfort zone.

The Resene Half Duck Egg Blue walls of the dining area are glimpsed from the entrance hall in a scheme that unfolds as you walk through the house.

The kitchen cabinetry is painted Resene Half Delta which not only complements the Resene Half Duck Egg Blue walls but balances the Resene Delta doors throughout the rest of the house.
New panelling supports the home’s Hamptons look, and is painted in Resene Quarter Sea Fog, using Resene Lumbersider for a contemporary low sheen finish. The walls above the panelling is Resene Sea Fog while the oak floor is stained in Resene Colorwood Walnut.
The master bedroom continues the subtle blue palette with the restful Resene Half Periglacial Blue on the walls.
The stairwell landing is the perfect spot for a computer nook. The walls here are Resene Sea Fog, while the glimpse into the bathroom shows Resene Emerge walls.
Resene Emerge was chosen for the walls above the Resene Double Alabaster panelling in the bathroom because it “was simply gorgeous.”
Another bedroom departs from the blue palette with Resene Miso on the walls - a fresh yellow green.
