Kitchens that catch your eye
This year we’ve featured some stellar kitchens painted in Resene, styled to perfection and showing the different ways to create a beautiful (and well-functioning) kitchen.
The most popular kitchens we feature seem to have a few things in common – a neutral colour palette on the walls, with accents of colour featured in furniture and lamp pendants, as well as lots of natural elements – from a plywood ceiling finished in Resene Aquaclear to wood-topped bar stools.
If you’re about to renovate your kitchen, here are a few tips:
- Like bathrooms, kitchens tend to attract unwanted nasties. Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom combines anti-bacterial silver protection and MoulDefender mould inhibitor, perfect for minimising those nasties in kitchens, bathrooms and laundries.
- The kitchen work triangle rule is a great concept to use when determining kitchen layouts – the main tasks in a kitchen are usually carried out between the cook top, fridge and sink. Think about how you move around the kitchen and an efficient distance between those three elements.
- A big pantry means you can get away with less bench space in the kitchen. Big drawers can also be more useful than shelf space or cupboards – as you can bring the drawers out and see all the cups, plates, spices, etc. instead of them hiding behind each other on shelves. Shop around to see what’s the best solution is for you.
- Know the colour that adds dollars to your home? Last year, studies showed that homes with blue kitchens, often in soft grey-blue, sold for a premium – think Resene Half Duck Egg Blue. See more about why blue is so appealing to home buyers here.
- Splashbacks are great ways to add, well, a splash of colour. Consider a glass splashback, with a back-painted backing in the Resene colour of your choice.

Homeowners Gemma and Sam Hain renovated an old Gisborne farmhouse, retaining its charm while adding modern elements to the home. The kitchen shows off the home’s modern industrial barn feel, featuring original matai wood from when the home was built in 1936. The walls are painted in Resene Double Black White with trims painted in Resene Half Black White. See the rest of the home here.
The exterior of this Christchurch home often has people leaving notes in the letterbox asking for the front door colour (painted in lively orange Resene Sebedee, it’s no surprise that it attracts interest). Inside, the kitchen is less colourful but just as enticing, painted in Resene Double Merino with a ceiling finished in Resene Colorwood Rock Salt and Resene Aquaclear. It blends natural tones with splashes of colour in the furniture and decor, giving it a happy, beachy feel. See the rest of the home here.
For homeowners Nic and Shane Burnett, a large open-plan kitchen and living area were a must-have from the beginning of the build of the Customkit home. The monochrome colour scheme, with walls painted in Resene Alabaster, sets off the touches of natural wood, plants and black accents. See the rest of the home here.
This homeowner turned her home from “dull and dreary” to a colourful dream, bringing in every colour of the rainbow to add accents to her home. The open plan kitchen is the one place in the home that has a neutral palette, painted in Resene Quarter Tea, providing a neutral base for the splashes of colour seen throughout the home. See the rest of the home here.
With their home only 50 metres from the beach, Steve and Susie Webling decided on a coastal feel for the interior, painting the walls in fresh and light Resene Sea Fog. The kitchen is filled with natural wood cabinetry with a ceiling finished in Resene Aquaclear. A timber feature door (hidden here) separates the scullery in the kitchen, while still allowing light to filter through. See the rest of the home here.
