Keeping it coastal – Lisa and Scott's winning interiors

Think about the feelings you get on a sky-blue day by the sea... watching those calming hues and changing colours along the coast, as the sunshine bounces off the ocean.

Inspired by sand, sea, sky and stone, this Auckland new build home brings about those same feelings, with its blend of tranquil Resene blues and clear Resene whites, and touches of oiled cedar and sandy neutral brickwork.

Lisa Day and Scott Donnell, of Donnell & Day Architecture, won the Resene Total Colour Residential Interior Award last month for the design. Judges were impressed by the home's colour scheme, which brings elements from its coastal location indoors, all without overpowering the interior.

We spoke to Lisa about all the details that bring together this winning design.

What was the brief and inspiration for this project?

We were asked to build a new home for a young family, on a subdivided site in East Auckland. The family wanted their home to be sustainable and affordable. We considered the whole site as a series of overlapping spaces that could provide shelter for the family, help feed them, reduce energy use, and respond to its environment.

Can you give us more detail on the Resene colours used, and why?

The interior colours were designed to link the house to the natural world, and provide a calm haven for the family.

Sand, sea, sky and stone colours were selected to ensure that the spaces flow together as your journey through the house, and to bring the outside in – blue walls in Resene Blumine, Resene Nepal, and Resene Blue Bayoux shift in hue in a similar way the sea changes colour over the course of the day.

The white ceiling in Resene Alabaster flows from inside the house to the outside verandah, and colour accents are placed in rooms where the neutral sandy brick or natural recycled timbers are the predominant colour theme.

The colours for the children's rooms (Resene Blumine for the boy's, and Resene Nepal for the girl's) were selected to offset their toys, and ensure that the room is a calm backdrop to their busy lives. We also painted a cabinet in Resene Killarney, Resene Splish Splash, Resene Rocket, and Resene Balloon for the boy's bedroom.

There's a real focus on being eco-friendly. Can you tell us more?

With the increasing demand for housing in this city, there’s a need for quality yet cost-effective houses that respect the environment and are designed from the start to be energy efficient.

Materials were also carefully selected to ensure a healthy indoor environment, so Environmental Choice approved paints, with low or no VOC components, and natural oils were used.

To help reduce energy we included temperature control in the design, to naturally cool the home in summer and heat it up in winter.

This includes external verandahs to help modify the light so that the winter sun can penetrate deep into the rooms to naturally heat the space, by warming the concrete slab. In summer, they are dimensioned to keep the sun out and maintain a cool internal temperature.

For the boy's bedroom a feature wall in Resene Blumine, a deepwater blue, glows in the sunshine. Resene Half Barely There is a wonderful accompaniment painted on the adjacent walls, with Resene Alabaster used for the ceiling.

A painted cabinet in Resene Killarney, Resene Splish Splash, Resene Rocket, and Resene Balloon holds toys and books just as colourful in the boy's bedroom.

The architects chose Resene Nepal, a smoky blue grey pastel, for the girl's bedroom. Resene Half Barely There and Resene Alabaster were used as well, in tune with her brother's bedroom.

Colour accents have been placed in rooms where the neutral sandy brick or natural recycled timbers are the predominant colour theme – Resene Half Barely There was chosen for the living room walls, helping to create a calming haven.

The white ceiling, painted in Resene Alabaster, flows from inside the house to the outside verandah, enabling a blurring of the boundary between garden and room.

The open kitchen and living room give easy access to an outdoor fruit and vegetable garden, with plenty of produce for meals around the dining table.

The walls are painted in Resene Half Barely There, and the ceiling is in Resene Alabaster.

These walls, also in Resene Half Barely There, help set the mood for this zen and wonderfully lit bathroom.

Light penetrates into the southern side of the building, creating a play of light through the vertical battens. Low sheen and matt finishes were used here and throughout the home to create tactile light surfaces.

Underneath the staircase, there are more details to love. A stylish daybed sits before a feature wall in Resene Blue Bayoux; the trim on the banister is painted in Resene Alabaster.

Architect Scott Donnell made the bespoke light fitting from recycled fragments of timber from the build.
