Luc’s awesome alpine sanctuary
When Belgian chef Luc bought a house close to Queenstown, he could see past the green exterior, yellow painted interior and carpeted floors. He even had a way to integrate the unusual red aluminium windows into a new scheme for the house, by matching it to a Resene paint – Resene Burgundy – and using that paint colour in one of the bedrooms.
Luckily, Resene Burgundy also complemented the collection of Asian furniture Luc had brought with him from Belgium, with its distinctive red lacquered decoration.
The house now has a much more luxurious feel with velvet wallpapers Luc bought from Europe, dusky oak flooring and soothing colours. The new, more dramatic interiors also match its dynamic setting, high on the hill above Lake Wakatipu, 15 minutes drive from Queenstown towards Glenorchy. The house is surrounded by beautifully planted alpine gardens with grasses and flaxes that nestle around the house and help it blend into the landscape.
What Resene colours and products have you used, and what inspired those choices?
Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Burgundy (which is actually more of a rusty red). This is the same colour as the deep reds you find in the Asian cabinets and matches the existing window frames outside.
I used Resene Akaroa in the living area, which is a nice warm grey. Then Resene Eighth Akaroa on the ceilings.
I redid the old murky green board and batten exterior with Resene Woodsman exterior stain in Resene Pitch Black.
How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors? What was your overall philosophy?
My furniture had an Asian theme so I tried to carry through with this.
I like dark colours but rather than use them everywhere, I have used dark tones in feature walls then balanced them with lighter colours. I have a bit of art, most of it in gold frames, and these look particularly good against the darker walls.
What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?
Fit your colours with the furniture that you have. Pick out the colours in the furniture and work with that.
What was the biggest decorating, renovating or building challenge for this project?
Hanging the wallpaper, which I did myself. Make sure that the wall behind is the same colour as the wallpaper so that any small gaps do not show up.

Rich rusty red

Luc chose Resene Burgundy for two feature walls in this bedroom, which echoes the red detailing in the tall Asian cabinets. The other wall is Resene Akaroa.
A soothing backdrop to a great view

The living area walls, in Resene Akaroa, are a soothing backdrop to the dramatic view of Lake Wakatipu outside the windows.
Smartly dark

Once green, the exterior was re-stained in Resene Pitch Black from the Resene Woodsman exterior stains range.
A dining trophy

Antler light fitting over the dining room table was made by a relative and brought with Luc from Belgium - perfect for this alpine setting.
The longer view

A longer view of the open-plan living room with its Resene Akaroa walls.
Even the littlest room goes luxe

The bathroom continues the luxury feel with a gold-framed mirror and black feature wall.
