Mia and David’s award-winning modern Kiwi-meets-Scandi-chic Canterbury home
After their Christchurch home was devasted by the February 2011 earthquakes, Mia and David were forced to start again from scratch. Originally from Sweden, Mia was naturally partial to bringing a Scandinavian feel to their family-orientated rebuild, employing Mason & Wales Architects to bring her vision to life with a simple Resene palette punctuated with bright, cheerful hues. And David, having spent most of his career in property development, knew just the right builder for the job: Mike Brown from MO Brown Builders.
“We knew we wanted a streamlined design with timber inside and out, including a cedar exterior and extensive Swedish oak flooring inside,” Mia explains.
But, of course, creating their new dream home didn’t come without its challenges, including the usual suspects like staying on budget and choosing just the right white.
“There are so many to choose from, and considering the importance of base colour, it can be a daunting task.”
But when all was said and done, their new home has proven to be a success on all fronts – not only for the way its Scandi-chic aesthetic blends beautifully with the family of five’s New Zealand lifestyle, but for also garnering multiple awards in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition.
“The home exudes a relaxed, resort-like feel while effortlessly fulfilling the day-to-day needs of a modern family. Living areas are spacious yet intimate. With a large scullery and media room, contemporary comforts abound. The bedrooms each have a distinct personality with three bathrooms to match. Careful use of lighting, interior decor and landscaping further enhance the owners’ passion for this beautifully crafted home,” the judges said.
Mia felt that it is the combination of light oak flooring, a neutral colour palette, Scandi-style wallpaper and furnishings are the telltale elements that gives the home its Scandinavian feel. “And bringing the outdoors in with large hardwood decks floating in and out of the living areas has created a successful combination of north and south.”
To create a breezy feel in the open plan kitchen, living and dining area, Mia and David opted for walls in Resene Merino. Combined with the large sliding doors, the space looks light, spacious and ultra-inviting.
“In summer, we open up the sliding doors and enjoy the louvre covered deck which becomes a really nice extension of our living area,” Mia says.

Mia and David's open plan living area looks like a breath of fresh air in Resene Merino, made all the brighter by the expansive glass sliding doors. The ceiling and architraves are painted Resene Quarter Merino.
A ceiling and architraves in Resene Quarter Merino and walls in Resene Merino, both chosen for their light and airy feel, add to the spaciousness of the open plan kitchen/living/dining area.
Inside the large scullery, Mia and David painted an entire wall in Resene Write-on Wall Paint, which ended up being a huge hit with the kids. This fun idea ended up being a practical one too, with the family using it to write shopping lists and reminders. The ceiling is in Resene Quarter Merino.
Favoured by Mia for its versatility, Resene Merino was used extensively on the walls throughout her and David’s Scandi-style home. The ceiling is in Resene Quarter Merino while a sliding door in Resene Clementine Orange adds a pop of colour that plays perfectly off the artwork.
A design with a truly Scandi aesthetic, Resene Wallpaper Collection SIL301 lines the wall next to the staircase. Design SIL301 is from an older wallpaper collection; for or a current alternative, try Resene Wallpaper Collection 34135-1 (shown on right). The walls are painted Resene Merino, the ceiling is in Resene Quarter Merino and the sliding pocket door is in Resene Clementine Orange.
While the open plan space is a sight to behold, Mia and David are also particularly chuffed with how their master bedroom turned out. A heavenly extension of the minimalist aesthetic present in the main living spaces, the walls are painted in Resene Quarter Heathered Grey with a moody feature wall in Resene Wallpaper Collection UNI502 behind the bed to ground the space and cedar shutters that allow natural light to be filtered throughout.
Resene Quarter Heathered Grey on the north, west and east walls help the feature wall in Resene Wallpaper Collection UNI502 truly stand out in the light-flooded master bedroom. Design UNI502 is from an older wallpaper collection; for a current alternative, try Resene Wallpaper Collection 528909 (shown on right). The ceiling is painted Resene Merino.
To bring in cheerful pops of colour to the other rooms, Mia and David chose accents walls in contrasting Resene wallpaper designs and paints interspersed with accessories in vibrant hues. Each room has been given unique character, while maintaining the home’s overall pared-down look.
A minimalist base palette in the kids’ bedrooms, including walls in Resene Merino and ceilings in Resene Quarter Merino, made them fair game for splashes of wild colour. In Maddie’s room, that was accomplished with vibrant red accessories and a wallpapered statement wall behind the bed. This design is from an older wallpaper collection; for a current alternative, try Resene Wallpaper Collection 610222 (shown on right).
In son Henry’s room, Resene Wallpaper Collection 237801 has a fun, graffiti vibe. Instead of wallpaper, a creative child could try their hand at making their own graffiti-style mural over a base in Resene Cod Grey using Resene Bright Spark, Resene Daredevil, Resene Lizzy, Resene Belladonna, Resene Bowie – or their own favourite colours.
Resene Clementine Orange adds a pop of colour to daughter Claudia’s study nook in the corner of her bedroom. A section of Resene Write-on Wall Paint whiteboard paint was painted on the right side of the nook, allowing her the space to make notes and stay organised. A similarly coloured lampshade brings the look together with the rest of the room, which is painted in Mia and David’s go-to hue Resene Merino.
Though it can be tempting to go crazy with colour, Mia and David advise to initially keep things simple. “You can always add more colours and features later, but start with a neutral base and work from there once you’ve had a chance to live in the house for a while.”
Resene Nocturnal (right) and Resene Triple Merino (left) sit side by side in perfect harmony on the walls of the guest bathroom. The natural wood vanity and simple accessories make for a calming environment.
In the media room, a feature wall in Resene Wallpaper Collection BAC302 contrasts sharply with adjacent walls in Resene Quarter Heathered Grey. The ceiling is painted Resene Quarter Merino. Design BAC302 is from an older wallpaper collection; for a current alternative, try Resene Wallpaper Collection FD25354 (shown on right).
Mia and David’s strong sense of visual direction and thoughtful use of space has paid off with a home that feels both timeless and modern. No doubt, their family will be enjoying the Scandi-meets-Kiwi look for generations to come.
