Mia and Michael's charming country escape
With views to the Kaimai ranges, beautiful sunsets over the rolling Matamata countryside, and an interior painted in tranquil Resene colours, this charming bed and breakfast is a perfect country escape.
Owned by Mia and Michael Smith, the property has been in Mia’s family for more than 30 years, purchased when they arrived from the Netherlands. The couple took over the family home two years ago, and set in plans to build a B&B, as Matamata was in need of further accommodation due to the number of tourists visiting Hobbiton.
They opened it earlier this year, naming it Walnut Lodge Bed & Breakfast... appropriately painted in Resene Toffee on the exterior. Mia tells us more.
How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors?
Creating a homely feel was important to us. Also, having so many international travellers meant that we wanted to have a Kiwiana theme, which we’ve brought about with our art and cushion choices.
What part of the house are you happiest with?
We like the living room, as the wallpaper creates warmth. We also added extra stud height to the ceiling so it gives the feeling of more space.
What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?
Look at your natural surrounds and tailor your colour scheme to the setting around you. Think a little outside the box and dare to be different.
What was the biggest decorating, renovating or building challenge for this project?
The painting of the exterior of the property – we underestimated the time and amount of painting it would take. Height, of course, was a factor with the gables.
Do you a favourite colour, and if so why is it your favourite?
Resene Pumice – it’s a relaxing, soft colour. We’ve received lots of compliments with the use of this colour.
Is there anyone else you would like mentioned?
We were given advice and reassurance of my colour choices from a good friend, Hannah McCarthy Interiors.
