Michael brings coastal charm to character villa
What was once bordering on a student flat aesthetic has been transformed into an elegant home painted in coastal-inspired Resene colours thanks to its homeowners and designer Michael Mansvelt.
During the 1990s, the two-storey villa had been replumbed, rewired and overhauled but still wore an over-abundance of timber… leaving the interior looking dark and dated. After some discussion, it was decided to paint out all of the timber, including the skirting boards, panelling and ceilings.
Michael and the owner worked together to create a colour palette. They considered painting the whole home white, but in the end took their inspiration from the home’s location near the Taranaki coast.
The owners wanted classic but not boring for the character home, which Michael has perfectly achieved – the dominant colours are now soft Resene blues and greens, balanced by navy and grey. A main neutral, Resene Albescent White, has been used throughout the home to unify the scheme.
“We used Resene Albescent White everywhere with both the exterior and the interior,” says Michael. “It’s a really great go-to white – creamy, not too cold. You could put any colour with it and it would look good.”
Anchoring the colour scheme is deep grey Resene Wireless, painted on the exterior and inside on the hall walls and stairwell. Resene Wireless is from an older colour collection – try Resene Half Baltic Sea as an alternative.
The rest of the home is a study of beautiful blues and greens, from Resene Quarter Duck Egg Blue in the kitchen and family room to inky Resene Coast in the formal dining room.
The colours flow beautifully from one room to another, creating a timeless and interesting colour scheme.
Looking from the lounge, through the hall and back to the formal dining room, Michael reflects on how the colours work together. “I think they all blend well with each other and talk to each – it’s beautiful. It’s light, medium and dark, but also green, grey, blue.”
The master bedroom is the only neutral room in the house, painted entirely in Resene Albescent White – although blue can be seen from the sea views through the room’s french doors. “I sneaked [the neutral palette] in through the back door. I had to have one white room just in case I hated the others,” jokes the owner. Luckily, once the paint dried up, she was sold on the skilfully coloured rooms, each a distinctive colour creating a harmonious whole.
Character homes are a passion for one of the homeowners, who had already restored another character home in Taranaki before this one. Now that the villa is complete, she and Michael are talking about another project, perhaps combining her love for heritage homes and Michael’s design expertise (and introducing a more contemporary aesthetic). In the meantime, they have this beautifully restored villa to enjoy.

Other stormy greys to try
These homeowners love Resene Coast and Resene Wireless for their moody, stormy quality. Here are some other similar colours to try from the Resene colour collections, edged with a touch of blue, purple, brown or green:
Resene Dune is a co-operation of dark grey and a touch of ochre.
Resene Revolver is a complex and moody blackened purple.
Resene Atomic is a powerful combination of grey and blue.
Resene Jurassic is a dusky, ancient green grey.

Modern and classic decor live together in this updated character villa. The walls in the kitchen are painted in soft Resene Quarter Duck Egg Blue, with trims and ceiling painted in Resene Albescent White.
The formal lounge has a timeless feel, painted in dusky Resene Inside Back. We asked two designers to suggest a different look for this lounge, including an alternative colour scheme – see their gorgeous designs here.
The formal dining room is designer Michael Mansvelt’s favourite room, painted in inky Resene Coast.
The master bedroom is the only neutral space in the home, painted in Resene Albescent White. The bedroom looks out to coastal views.
Across the hallway is their daughter’s bedroom, painted in Resene Half Periglacial Blue with accents of soft red and pink in the decor.
In the hallway, bold Resene Wireless is painted on the walls with Resene Albescent White on the tongue and groove. Traditional paintings on the walls and a contemporary light fitting once again show the home’s perfect balance of old and new.
While a villa exterior traditionally features up to six colours, Michael chose two colours to update the outside of this two-storey Taranaki home. The weatherboards are painted in Resene Wireless, with Resene Albescent White and Resene Black trims. Resene Wireless is from an older colour collection – try Resene Half Baltic Sea as an alternative.
Top tip: Resene Lumbersider is the best paint for exterior use on wooden surfaces if you’re after a low-sheen finish, whether you are painting your weatherboards or your fence.
If you are using a dark exterior colour, remember to ask for Resene CoolColour paint. It reflects more of the sun’s UV, protecting the paint and the cladding by minimising heat stress and potential damage.
