Mike and Robyn’s sun-filled Omaha beach house
There's a natural tranquility to Mike and Robyn's home, with its sun-filled deck and open plan living area. Located in Omaha, an hour's drive from Auckland, the newly built home is wrapped in soothing Resene colours to bring a relaxed feel to the interiors that the couple desired.
Outside, cedar weatherboards are finished in Resene Smokey Ash from the Resene Woodsman exterior wood stains range, an aged wood hue perfect for the beach side location. Coupled with spouting and downpipes in Ironsand from the Marley Stratus Design Series® range, they love the result.
"I've had at least five approaches from strangers wanting to know the colours of our home, which is a huge compliment," says Robyn.
She talks us through the project, from building challenges to her favourite place to relax in the house.
What part of the house are you most happy with?
We love the open plan of the downstairs area, with the outdoor flow onto numerous hardwood decks. And the polished concrete floors really enhance the wall colours.
We have a covered deck upstairs, an area off the two front bedrooms with sliding shutters and wicker tub chairs, that’s a really nice spot to relax and read a book.
What Resene colours and products have you used, in which rooms, and what inspired those choices?
We were looking for a beachy look, and used Resene colours throughout the entire property. For the interiors, we used Resene Half Fossil on the walls and Resene Half Bianca on the ceilings, doors and trims. We wanted cedar weatherboards and Resene Smokey Ash was the colour I wanted. We used the same colour for the fascia boards, and Resene White Pointer for the soffit. Choosing designer uPVC spouting and downpipes from the Marley Stratus Design Series® range has also meant we have real peace of mind that it will go the distance in our coatsal environment. With a 15 year guarantee, it will not rust, is UV resitant and made in New Zealand.
What challenges did you face during this project?
We had our biggest challenge in the initial stages when things were not going as promised and had to project manage ourselves which went very well.
By the time we got to the decorating, there were no issues and using a Resene colour consultant made life very easy.
What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?
We kept the colours the same throughout the entire house. It works well.

The cedar weatherboards of this exterior were finished in Resene Smokey Ash, from the Resene Woodsman exterior wood stains range, allowing the natural grains to show. The Marley Stratus Design Series® Ironsand spouting and downpipes work perfectly with the Resene Smokey Ash stain.

The couple decided to complement the smokey stain and chosen roofing with stylish spouting and downpipes in Ironsand from the Marley Stratus Design Series®. The soffit is painted in Resene Half Bianca.

One of the upstairs bedrooms opens up to this covered deck with walls painted in Resene Half Bianca. Inside the walls are painted in Resene Fossil, with the ceiling and trims in Resene Half Bianca, a colour scheme used throughout the home.

A closer look at one of the bedrooms, painted in soothing Resene colours, ready and waiting for guests to relax in.

Sunlight streams into the open plan kitchen and living area, with polished concrete floors and ceilings visually lifted by Resene Half Bianca.

There’s a seamless indoor/outdoor floor to the living area, leading to a lush outdoor entertaining area.
