Natalie and Dan’s modern, monochromatic Waikato build
Natalie and Dan Isaac may have had to live in a sleepout for a year while waiting on their house to be built, but the resulting home, a modern beauty painted in Resene Quarter White Pointer throughout, was well worth the sacrifice.
The couple had already built a home a few years beforehand but were ready to take on a new project. This time around, Natalie wanted a contemporary, monochromatic look – this was brought in through modern barn doors in the kitchen (painted in black Resene Nero), feature walls in black and white wallpaper from the Resene Wallpaper Collection, and tongue and groove walls painted in varying Resene colours.
It’s not all black and white though – accents of colour feature through linen and decor, including an impressive floral wall in the hallway of the Waikato home.
Natalie tells us more.
How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors?
I’m a very black and white person, and I know I can add colour where necessary. I like high ceilings so white walls and high ceilings have heightened the space, enabling me to use lots of black without creating a dark space.
What part of the house are you happiest with?
I love my kitchen and front entrance. My friend has a business called Sienna Reid, which creates floral walls for events. I have a permanent one in my entrance that is seen instantly through my big glass entry door.
What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?
Don’t be afraid that the black will enclose the space. It’s classy and timeless. Then accessorise with bright and bold colours.
What was the biggest challenge for this project?
We painted the whole exterior ourselves. Painting over the bricks was difficult but so worth it.
Do you have a favourite colour, and if so why is it your favourite?
As crazy as it sounds, black. Even my car is black. However, I am a tad obsessed with blush pink which I have used in the master bedroom.
How did you find working with Resene paint and colours?
Really good. Great selection. The staff were fantastic in our local Resene ColorShop.
Is there anyone else you would like mentioned?
My husband and his building company DJ Isaac Builder, who built the house. We had been living in the shed for a while already and kept on putting off the build because his workload was so hectic. Eventually we had to make a start!
From pouring the concrete pad, to moving in, it took only them four and a half months to build, yet no quality was compromised – just great staff and organisation.
Our sub-trades, all ready to go when we were, also made for an easy build and we appreciate their great work.
