Asbestos Awareness Week: Prioritising Health and Safety in Renovations

20 Nov 2024

Asbestos Awareness Week runs from 18-24 November 2024, an essential reminder of the severe health risks posed by asbestos. As New Zealand’s number one workplace killer, asbestos exposure continues to be a critical issue, with around 220 people succumbing to asbestos-related diseases annually.

Despite the health hazards being well-documented for over 80 years, asbestos exposure remains a risk, especially in industries where older building materials are prevalent. WorkSafe New Zealand is calling on the sector to unify in promoting a safer work environment.

Homeowners tackling DIY renovations need to be mindful, as their projects can inadvertently expose themselves and any tradespeople working on their properties to asbestos risks. This initiative also highlights the urgent need for businesses, tradies and contractors to implement stringent safety measures to protect workers from asbestos exposure.

In response, WorkSafe has recently updated its asbestos guidance, providing comprehensive advice for various groups, including homeowners, businesses and workers. Key updates cover protective clothing and equipment, managing asbestos in buildings and responsibilities for those overseeing worksites. More updates are planned, ensuring that everyone involved has access to the latest safety information and practices.
