The Block NZ – Outdoors week is the last reveal

11 Aug 2016

Last week, the teams of TV3's The Block NZ: Girls Vs Boys headed outdoors for the last challenge of the season.

The judges wanted lush spaces that made good use of native plants. And they noted that Kiwis love to entertain so to put some thought into outdoor living and where to seat guests. The outdoor living spaces also needed to link to the approach at the front of the houses.

Niki and Tiff

Winning this week’s reveal, Niki and Tiff delivered a space that cleverly interacted with the dining area of the house, and created a good dynamic.

The judges were particularly impressed with the tiles, which were different and interesting as well as practical with a non-slip finish.

They described it as a very 'Kiwi' space with the barbecue and native plants, but with a contemporary twist. The citrus plants were a fantastic feature and practical for a barbecue area, and the water tank feature and planting hit the brief.

Dyls and Dylz

Dyls and Dyls created an ‘outdoor room’ that extended the house, using a Louvretec roof for added flexibility.

The judges loved the curved resort-style boardwalk, which combined with the deck, native plants and pebbles to give the area a very Kiwi feel, and that were a smart low-maintenance choice. The space had nice continuity with the timber features used inside the house. A vege/herb garden was also included in the design.

The judges liked the large tree in the yard and thought the fairy lights were a cute addition.

Emma and Courtney

Emma and Courtney’s deck gave their outdoors a nice feeling of openness and space, and its size makes the space very versatile. Keeping the four big trees was a good choice and the judges liked the 'love seat' which gave the area a bit of romance.

The judges thought the furniture was a little too large for the space, and more accessories and details were needed. Once established, however, the plant wall would make a beautiful feature once the jasmine had grown.

Overall, the outdoors should be popular with buyers because of the lawn and the size of the deck.

Sam and Emmett

Sam and Emmett created an outdoor dining space, anchored with patterned chequerboard paving, and including plant and herb gardens.

The judges noted that the lights would look quite moody against the wall at night, particularly when the plants had grown, and the copper finish of the lights gave the space a lift. They commented that the area lacked some design consideration and detail, such as a barbecue and table accessories.

Overall, there was a good amount of space which would appeal to buyers especially when the planting gives the area more privacy.
