The Block NZ recap: tackling garage and laundry week

31 Aug 2017

It was all go on Three's Block NZ last week, as the teams frantically knuckled down to get their garage and laundry spaces completed.

Teal blues were the colour of the day, while other teams preferred to keep to natural finishes... but only one room can be deemed the winner. Here are all the details of the latest room reveals.

Ling & Zing

The judges liked Ling and Zing's well lit, multi-purpose space, especially the plywood walls, finished in Resene Aquaclear, with the negative detail painted in Resene Alabaster. It's hard wearing and very practical for a garage, they said.

They also loved the fun elements of the garage, from the dart board to the golf clubs used to hang up the tools.

The laundry area was simple, but well designed with a large practical bench top for two washing baskets, and the glossy cabinetry also contrasted nicely with the plywood walls.

Overall, they said the execution was great and the design was fun and creative.

Aside from a little bit of rough painting around the window sill, the rest of the space was finished to a high standard.

Andy & Nate

"Wow." That was the judges' first impression of Andy and Nate's garage, laundry and gym, which they reckon will be a real draw card for buyers.

They judges loved the layout of the laundry, and thought that the splashback tiles were really beautiful. The reflective quality works really well with the dark cabinetry and looks great when the LED lights are switched on.

The expansive bench surface is really practical, and staining and painting the plywood walls was a good decision – the boys finished it in Resene Colorwood Whitewash, with lovely blocks of Resene Teal Blue.

Overall, this was a very multi-purpose and functional space, the judges said, naming Andy and Nate as this week’s winners.

Julia & Ali

Despite the very high standard of finishing for the plywood wall and plywood ceiling, finished in Resene Aquaclear, the judges felt there was a bit too much of it.

However, they did think that the laundry was a lovely, practical space, and praised the dark cabinetry, tiled splashback and the twins' choice of tapware. The top of the range washing machine, dryer, the freezer, and wine fridge will also be a hit for buyers.

Overall, the judges recognised that Julia and Ali had completed the space to a very high standard and hit the brief. It was just not as multi-functional as some of the other spaces.

Stace & Yanita

In Stace and Yanita's room, the judges loved seeing some colour on the walls and the cute pops of bright orange which tied in with their team colour. They also thought the art decals were cute and added a little bit of fun to the space – and the LED feature lighting was fantastic.

The laundry was simple and functional and the black and white colour scheme worked well, said one of the judges. He also thought the reflective glass splashback was a nice contrast to the matte black cabinetry, he said.

It was also good to see the linen cupboard – having it on the ground level isn't the most ideal place with the family bathroom on the second level but at least they now have one, said the judges.

Overall, it was a good clean space with a nice use of colour, some great lighting, and excellent storage solutions... but Stace and Yanita's finishing lines were a mess once again. This is something they really need to sort out, said the judges.
