The Block NZ recap: to the roof!

This week on Three's The Block NZ, the teams went upstairs and outside to complete their rooftop terrace. With help from friends and family to finish everything off, there was good cheer all around. Here's who came out on top for rooftop terrace week.

Ling & Zing

"It was like walking out on to the bows of a ship with a beautiful view laid out before you," said the judges of Ling and Zing's rooftop reveal. "And all the benefits of being the house at the front of the road."

The judges loved the decking and said it was very well executed. And the outdoor heaters were a great choice for the rooftop to keep guests warm. But their choice of furniture, while nice, wasn't really substantial enough for the space. It would have been nice to see a lounger or two to take advantage of the sun.

They liked the simple garden but felt that Ling and Zing could have gone a bit further with their design to give it a wow factor. Overall the judges said it was a nice, simple space but it could have used a little more layering.

Andy & Nate

The judges weren't impressed that Andy and Nate built a pergola on their rooftop. It's so unnecessary and takes your eye away from the spectacular view.

The judges also thought that the colour of the timber was a terrible choice as it is not harmonious with anything else in the roof garden. It's a shame that they put so much effort into it as it's beautifully finished but its just not right for the space.

Jason said the garden was really nicely done. The pebbles and the boxes looked smart, and he loved the copper lights. Bernadette said that their choice of tiles were lovely and would reflect the sunlight really well.

They also thought that their choice of furniture up on the roof was good and everything was finished to a high standard, which is Andy and Nate's hallmark. But it's a shame that no one would notice... because they'll be staring at what looks like "nana's carport".

Julia & Ali 

The judges loved the hedging and grass combination of Julia and Ali's space, and thought it was cute that they had thought of creating a pet friendly space. It's a nice point of difference and would appeal to pet lovers in the market.

Jason was a big fan of the hedging. He said it was clever the way it covered the glass fixings to soften the view, and makes the wall easy on the eye when you're looking back into the city.

The decking and copper lighting were very smart and the garden lighting was very sophisticated – it will look lovely at night.

Bernadette liked the twins' herb garden but she felt that the space was missing a lounger to make the most of the sun. There was some nice attention to detail with the door hold back, the hose, and they spied a sink with a fridge in the utility room.

Overall, they said that Julia and Ali had created a clever green space with a real point of difference from the other houses.

Stace & Yanita 

The judges' first impression of Stace and Yanita's reveal was: "What an outstanding view. There is a lovely sense of space up here and potential buyers are going to love it."

They loved the layout of their outdoor furniture and the fact that they had some loungers to bask in the summer sun. One of the judges liked the timber detail around the garden, and loved their choice of tile. They were really well formatted and finished to a high standard. But he questioned the lack of a servery table to put things on.

The other judge said that the in-ground deck lights were a nice choice and it was good to see that they had included an extra umbrella to provide shade from the northern sun. She also liked the fabric Stace and Yanita had chosen for the awning.

Overall, the judges said it was a really well finished entertaining space with a cute, low maintenance garden. It will be a real asset for this house, year round.
