The first week of House Rules 2023 has aired, and if you love a good before and after, this is the show for you – although it’s not without its challenges and questionable design choices!  All the teams have the full Resene colour and wallpaper range to choose from, so there’s plenty of scope to go bold and bright, nice and neutral or something in between. 

This week we saw Jemma and Alvaro put their home on the line for a whole house renovation in five and a half days, and the design choices are completely down to the other four teams. It isn’t all fun and games though, the teams must follow five house rules as they compete for a lifechanging prize.  

Jemma and Alvaro’s house rules:

1. Fuse Scandi with Coastal in a modern way.
2. Bring in natural light and style with earthy tones.
3. Be clever with integrated design features.
4. Transform our bathroom into a relaxation retreat.
5. Supersize our lounge and kitchen giving us space to party!

A sneak peek at the results:

Jemma and Alvaro’s open plan dining room features Resene Wallpaper Collection E378032, a bold aqua pattern, with walls and ceiling painted in Resene Quarter Black White. 

The living room walls have been given a hint of texture with Resene Wallpaper Collection 44805, an anaglypta pattern. The ceiling is painted in Resene Quarter Black White. This team have opened this space and added some lovely Scandi décor.

This tranquil and versatile space is now a spare bedroom and office in one. The walls are painted in Resene Quarter Akaroa with ceiling in Resene Quarter Black White.

The spare bedroom is a stunning space with walls painted in Resene Alabaster and ceiling in Resene Quarter Black White. A feature has been added to the top half of the main wall using Resene Wallpaper Collection M36901. This team have seamlessly paired their décor to the shades chosen in this beachy print.

The master bedroom is painted in Resene Quarter Black White. The cupboard was also resized to give Jemma and Alvaro the space they need for clothing.  

You’ll have to watch to see the teams deliver their zones for judging and see homeowners Jemma and Alvaro see their completely renovated home for the first time. There’s smiles and tears as scores are revealed…

House Rules NZ streams first on ThreeNow with episodes uploaded at 12pm each day.

It then airs on Three - three times a week; Sundays 7pm, and Mondays and Tuesdays at 7:30pm.
