Jan Thomson’s St. Arnaud studio gets a refresh in red

24 Jan 2019

Talented full-time artist – and former Wellington-based housepainter – Jan Thomson lives and works in beautiful St. Arnard in Nelson Lakes National Park.

When the time came to repaint her studio, she decided to liven things up with Resene Lumbersider in Resene Red Oxide paired with Resene Atmosphere trims, Grey Friars joinery and a Resene Lichen roof – and Jan says she’s in love with the result.

“When we built our home and my studio 9 years ago, we painted them both in Resene Atmosphere,” says Jan, but she was “never entirely happy with that much grey.”

Her workspace, Korimako Studio, is nestled between a farm and the National Park, with beech, totara and kanuka close by, which, as Jan so perfectly puts it, makes the Resene Red Oxide “really zing against the greenery”. We couldn’t agree more.

She says the final touch will be her new studio sign, framed with some totara fence palings in Resene Lichen – a kind gift from a farmer friend.

Jan suspects that the house will at some point need to be reclad – potentially in coloured steel – but she plans to stick with Resene Red Oxide.

“I've really enjoyed this project,” says Jan. “This is a special, inspiring, creative workshop for me.”

We also like Jan’s original watercolour paintings nearly as much as we love her taste in colour. Take a look at some of her recent work on her studio’s website.
