Jazz meets art in Queenstown

20 Oct 2016

Labour Weekend will see the 39th Queenstown JazzFest which promises to deliver an exciting four days of live musical and art entertainment. The festival has grown from humble beginnings back in 1978 to become one of Queenstown's most popular arts events, featuring top class musicians from throughout the country and around the globe.

In the belief that jazz is a perfect accompaniment to contemporary art, the festival brings the two together to provide both a platform for artistic talent and an opportunity for audiences to enjoy an art form that they might not have otherwise appreciated.

In the Resene Jazz Meets Art events, four professional artists will participate in live art demonstrations using Resene paint: Maori artist Cheree Te Orangaroa Downes, carver Jeromy van Riel, Richard Adams and Sofia Minson (pictured).

The demonstrations are at the Creative Queenstown Markets on Earnslaw Park and at Gibbston Valley Winery on Saturday 22, and at Jacks Point Clubhouse on Sunday 23 October where the artists will demonstrate their creative processes during the live jazz performances.

This year’s festival will feature a fantastic line-up of musical acts from around the country and further afield who will showcase their talents across all genres of jazz as they take part in over 50 different free events and ticketed concerts. From smooth blues to big band swing, Dixieland to funk bands, traditional jazz to ground breaking contemporary concepts, there is something for everyone, young and old.
