“As more workplaces embrace a hybrid-working model, people are often choosing to relocate to quieter, laid-back communities like Clarks Beach,” says Liz Halpin, Lottery Operations Manager for the Heart Foundation. “Locations like this make perfect spots for our Heart Foundation Lottery homes, as the first-prize winners can enjoy a rural lifestyle without sacrificing the benefits of the inner city.”

Colour design and furnishings were chosen by Lucy at Yellowfox and Kate from the Furnishing Room. Here’s what they had to say about taking on this project.
What was your design brief?
Lucy: When selecting the colour palette for the Clarks Beach House, our objective was to create a scheme that not only embodies the serene essence of coastal Cape Cod aesthetics but also ensures a harmonious and inviting living environment.
Kate: Like all the Heart Foundation Lottery homes, my brief covered a broad field. The home needed to work for a variety of uses – a family home in which to raise children, a holiday home or somewhere to retire to.
The deep grey brown of Resene Masala was used as a feature wall in the main bedroom, with surrounding walls and ceilingpainted in Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream.
The second bedroom also has a neutral backdrop paintedin Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream, allowing colourful furnishings to shine.
What colours did you choose?
Lucy: On the exterior, we chose Resene Quarter Truffle, then continued inside with neutrals to reflect the coast, using Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream and accents of Resene Masala.
We emphasised warm, neutral tones to cultivate a welcoming atmosphere that resonates with both comfort and sophistication. Our intention was for prospective homeowners to step into the space and immediately envision themselves embracing the tranquil lifestyle that this exquisite setting offers. This thoughtfully curated palette aims to blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, enhancing the overall experience of coastal living.
Kate: I chose burnt oranges, yellows and bright pink and tied that in with black. This was to create a fun and vibrant atmosphere with a modern feel. The colours used in artwork and accessories also add excitement, energy and warmth.

What was the biggest challenge for this project?
Lucy: Over the many years of our partnership with the Heart Foundation and Jennian Homes, we’ve cultivated a robust synergy of processes and innovative ideas – which really helps us to navigate challenges that are thrown our way together. It’s not often that we encounter obstacles, letting us focus on delivering exceptional results.
Kate:I will say, it was a little bit of a challenge to tie the colour palette in with the furnishings in a way that appeals to a wide range of possible owners.
What was your favourite aspect of the design?
Kate: Funnily enough, my favourite aspect of the design was the most challenging! I enjoyed bringing the bright colours together in a way that created a welcoming, homely family home while still being sophisticated and modern. I used the furnishings to achieve this and the artwork we selected brought it all together.
Lucy: I am particularly drawn to the open-plan kitchen, which embodies a timeless simplicity. Its design fosters a welcoming atmosphere, seamlessly blending functionality with aesthetic appeal. This space invites creativity and connection, making it an ideal setting for both cooking and gathering.
