New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year competition launches for 2022

26 May 2022

It’s time to step out from behind the lens, entries are now open for the annual New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year. Resene is proud to be a sponsor of the event and present the Resene Colour Award.

Nelson’s Braden Fastier picked up the title for both New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year and the Resene Colour Award in 2021.

The country’s most popular photographic event, Photographer of the Year encompasses a competition, exhibition, audience voting and awards night. “Win a share of $6000 cash, a voyage with Heritage Expeditions, a trip with Adventure South NZ, public notoriety, industry back-slaps and the envious stares of your peers, all on one stage,” New Zealand Geographic says.

Categories include Resene Landscape, Leica PhotoStory, Auckland Zoo Wildlife, Lumix Society, Lightforce Aerial, Resene Built Environment and a new category, Adventure, brought to you by Adventure South NZ. The Nikon Photographer of the Year 2022 will be picked from all entrants, as will the Resene Colour Award and the Electric Kiwi Young Photographer award.

The Resene Colour Award is exciting and is a special award that recognises special vision in the use of colour where it contributes to the success of the image. This award is chosen from amongst all entrants. Last year Nelson’s Braden Fastier picked up the award. New Zealand Geographic publisher James Frankham said first time winner Braden showed great technical skill as well as an ability to tell a story through photos.

All photos must have been shot after January 1, 2021 (except PhotoStory, after Jan 2020) and within New Zealand territory - including New Zealand-administered Pacific and Antarctic dependencies. A maximum of 21 entries per entrant over the six categories - so 15 images and one set comprising four to six images in the PhotoStory category.

All entrants will have a crack at the Ockham Residential People’s Choice award, voted on by the general public. Read the full terms and conditions on NZ Geographic’s site.

Finalists will be announced in early September 2022, and will be voted on by the public for the Ockham Residential People’s Choice award. Winners will be announced at an awards night in Auckland on October 27. Entries close midday, Wednesday 13 July 2022 – don’t leave it to the last minute!
