On trend: tone on tone goes dark
There was a time when a ‘tonal’ scheme was all about pale dreamy schemes using variations of light neutrals.
Not this season. We’re seeing more and more dark, moody schemes that are unashamed in their boldness. They don’t pull accents from a different part of the colour spectrum or overly rely on lighter coloured accessories.
Deep rich luscious purple is a colour to watch for this year. While Pantone’s colour of the year was a vivid amethyst, there are limited opportunities to use that sort colour in interiors. But as soon as you cast your eye to darker, more muted versions of the colour, the potential for dramatic yet cocooning interiors opens up.
Sultry and complex, these bruised lilacs and purples are perfect for a bedroom retreat like this example. We also dressed the room as a living space, to show how versatile this sort of striking colour scheme can be.
The chest of drawers is painted in Resene Chapta And Verse, a smoky mid-purple that almost blends with the dark cocooning walls in Resene Gun Powder.
Two mesh platters have been repurposed as wall hangings and have been painted in deep rich purples (Resene Couture and Resene Sumptuous) so while the colours are shadowed against the wall, the texture is the highlight.
The handiest tool to creating a tonal colour scheme is paint. Instead of combing the shops for a vase that’s just the right shade, you can simply paint one. And it can be an affordable knick-knack from a $2 shop or local op shop. Here, a trio of organic-shaped, curvy vases is used as a softening element, with the vases treated to makeovers using Resene Steam Roller (tall), Resene Mamba (medium) and Resene Couture.
Why this room works:
- The wall colour is charcoal with just a touch of purple, which keeps it from being overpowering. A mistake we often make is not going ‘grey’ enough with colour choices and ending up with a wall colour that’s too in-your-face.
- The floor colour is an unexpected colour choice. To stop the room from being too matchy-matchy, the floor is an inky blue. It’s what the experts call a ‘related’ scheme where you choose colours next to each other on the colour wheel. See here for more.
- There’s a rhythm of circular shapes, which gives softness to the room – the vases and the wall hangings.
- Texture loosens the scheme and adds interest – the casual washed linen duvet, the shaggy rug and the mesh wall hangings.
- It’s not overly patterned. Just one floral cushion is added for a punch of interest, otherwise the room has plain colours and accessories, making it extremely restful to the eye.

While dark restful colours are perfect for bedrooms, they also work in living areas. This Hansen 3-Seater sofa in Mouse Grey Velvet from Me and My Trend adds a touch of luxe.

You can check your tonal scheme by viewing A4-sized paint samples in the Resene colour library at every Resene ColorShop. Or you can order some to use at home. Lay them out with some of the other elements you’re planning for the room, like bed linen or cushions, to see if your vision will come together. The background here is Resene Avalanche, and the samples are, Resene Steam Roller and Chapta And Verse on the left, and Resene Sumptuous and Resene Mamba on the right.
