Our favourite rooms on Three’s The Block NZ… so far

We’re halfway through this year’s The Block NZ, with six room reveals under the teams’ belts. Week by week, the four homes are becoming more and more beautiful as the teams get their DIY on… and they haven’t held back, featuring plenty of beautiful colour and stunning styling this season.

Although the teams are each developing an individual style, there are few trends that seem to be running throughout this season of The Block NZ. Here are a few we’ve noticed:

  • Deep Resene blues are still a firm favourite in interior design. Dark, moody and beautiful, they’ve featured in Amy and Stu’s guest bedroom (Resene Blue Night), Ben and Tom’s kid’s bedroom (also Resene Blue Night) and Claire and Agni’s multi-purpose space (Resene Indian Ink).

  • When it comes to furnishing these rooms in these dark blues, natural finishes and accents warm up the schemes, from gold-hued curtains in Amy and Stu’s guest room to a study nook and wood panelling skylight finished in Resene Aquaclear in Ben and Tom’s kid’s bedroom.

  • In fact, natural accents feature regularly throughout the four homes. Think rattan lamp pendants, wooden bedheads… even a whole loft made of plywood and finished in Resene Aquaclear as seen in Amy and Stu’s kid’s bedroom reveal.

  • Hanging ceiling pendants in various shapes, sizes and materials are also a big feature in many of the rooms, especially Claire and Agni’s and Amy and Stu’s, from cane light shades to blown glass beauties.

  • IInterior decorating on this season of The Block NZ seems to be influenced by a boho vibe – slightly relaxed, choosing tribal theme for bed linen, cushions and throws, as well as furniture and room elements in natural, wooden finishes. Gold, brass, brown and yellow accents also seem to be popular in the decor – the rooms exude so much warmth through these colour and decor choices.

It wasn’t easy, but we managed to pick five of our favourite room reveals from this season of Three’s The Block NZ. In no particular order, here they are.

For the first room reveal of the season, Amy and Stu from Gisborne went with on-trend dark Resene Blue Night for their dramatic colour scheme, with a feature wall and the ceiling in Resene Alabaster.

The brief was a guest bedroom with a Moody Botanical theme. According to judges Jason Bonham and Kristina Rapley they nailed the brief, with a large floral print, wood-framed bed and dusky pink bed linen. Accents of gold and super-fashionable mustard tones adds extra warmth to the bedroom.

Chlo and Em’s guest bedroom had a Peacock Blue Luxe theme – and the hand-made fabric headboard made by Em’s dad provided a stunning statement piece, set against walls in Resene Dust Storm.

To add to the peacock-inspired colour scheme, the team brought in a deep blue duvet cover, with layers of different jewelled tones and lush textiles for that “luxe” feel. A mustard armchair, blown glass lighting and gold elements heighten the elegant scheme.

In blank canvas week, Claire and Agni went bold with both paint colour and wallpaper. Painted in Resene Indian Ink with cheeky lemur wallpaper (design 12403 from the Resene Wallpaper Collection from Resene ColorShops), they created a multi-purpose space of media room, study area and guest area, including a fold-out sofa bed. Judges pointed out that this effectively has created a three-and-a-half-bedroom home.

This 15-year-old boy’s bedroom designed by Ben and Tom really stood out for its deep blue walls painted in Resene Blue Night, complemented by other walls in Resene Blue Night, complemented by other walls in Resene Half Sea Fog. The details were exquisite, including a study nook and wood panelling skylight finished in Resene Aquaclear and a refurbished skateboard, finished in Resene FX Nightlight – giving it a soft glow-in-the-dark effect.

While Amy and Stu’s kid’s bedroom was a winner in itself, the loft that they built above the bedroom was a great surprise. The loft can be reached by ladder and houses a perfect hangout, with plywood walls and ceilings finished in Resene Aquaclear… as well as giant Jenga ready to go. Judge Kristina fell in love with the room, saying that the pattern, colours, textures and the different materials worked so well together.
