Owen and Mary go shades of blue
It’s a case of classic meets contemporary in Mary and Owen’s Christchurch rebuild, where modern Resene blues bring a new feel to this otherwise traditional home.
The house was originally designed by Sir Michael Fowler, a revered New Zealand architect, but became badly damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes.
The homeowners loved the style of the house and wanted to keep a similar design, changing certain features to suit their style.
With the help of builders LOC Construction, they achieved this by raising the ceiling and door heights downstairs and adding two dormers upstairs, among a few other changes.
Mary tells us more.
How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors?
We wanted the interiors to be light, bright and modern but traditional enough to fit in with our favourite old pieces of furniture and art work.
What part of the house are you happiest with?
We are happiest with the two living rooms. The rooms run into each other and the colours blend very well.
What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?
Seek out and listen to an experienced decorator… but then make your own choices.
What was the biggest decorating, renovating or building challenge for this project?
The biggest decorating/building challenge was trying to create the home and designs we had in our heads in reality. This was made a lot easier by LOC Construction as they provided ideas and solutions to problems that arose during the building process, such as adding the dormers to provide more space in the upstairs rooms.
Do you have a favourite colour, and if so why is it your favourite?
My favourite colours are the shades of blue and soft green. They are warm and welcoming and seem to bring the garden into the home.
Is there anyone else you would like mentioned?
We would like to mention our excellent builders Les and Tom of LOC Construction, as well as Donna Weir Design.
