Red hot interiors: Make a statement with these vibrant décor ideas

The colour red has long been associated with passion, energy and a sense of vibrancy. However, its use in home decor has evolved over the years, offering a range of possibilities beyond traditional applications. From creating an earthy feel with brick red accents to incorporating bold reds for a vibrant, warm and inviting atmosphere, there are many Resene reds for you to integrate into your home.

What’s more, this month we are supporting Red Nose Day, where every 60 mL red testpot bought from Resene owned ColorShops (NZ) means a $1 donation to CureKids. It is only because of the generous contributions CureKids receives, that they can continuously fund vital child health research to make a difference in the health and wellbeing of our precious children.

Earthy elegance

Creams like Resene Meringue create an air of sophisticated elegance when teamed with brick red accents in colours like Resene Savour and Resene Soiree. Amp up the glamour with furniture in a jet black like Resene Nero or soften the look with earthy brown and green accessories in Resene Allspice and Resene Field Day. Arched niche and large plant pot painted in Resene Soiree, other walls and floor in Resene Meringue, medium pot in Resene Field Day and small pot and lamp base in Resene Allspice. Chair and rug from Ligne Roset, side table from Good Form, mirror from Mocka, books and candle from Father Rabbit. Project by Amber Armitage, image by Bryce Carleton.

Brick reds continue to be hugely relevant, but what’s different today is the way these tones are being used. Instead of using colours like Resene Savour, Resene Pioneer Red and Resene Scoria as part of a cosy, earthy and homey colour scheme, you can create a more refined, elegant and opulent look in your home by pairing them with creams, blacks and golds. Try a sumptuous cream like Resene Double Merino, a deep black like Resene Nero or a shimmering gold like Resene Gold Dust from the Resene FX Metallic range.

Get reddy

Bold reds create a space that is exotic, casual and warm. This room’s upper wall is painted in Resene Poppy with Resene Dynamite on the lower wall. The main floor colour is Resene Wishing Well with a stencilled pattern painted in Resene Time After Time. The table is painted in Resene Wishing Well and the floor vase is Resene Raging Bull. On the shelf the vase is Resene Moccasin, the wine box is stained in Resene Colorwood Natural and the bowl is Resene Elderflower. Project by Gem Adams, image by Wendy Fenwick.

No longer consigned to feature walls from the 1990s, modern reds can be layered through a whole room for a dramatic but inviting and cosy look. On this side of the world, with our clear, bright, natural light, we have traditionally opted for bluer, deeper reds such as Resene Dynamite used on this lower wall. By pairing it with a truer red such as the Resene Poppy on the upper wall, the overall effect is less oppressive and opens the room up.

Try pairing this vibrant shade with jewelled or spicy tones by adding vibrant mustard yellows, or even mellow golds, both in layered paint tones and accessories. Resene Bird Flower, Resene Sunflower and Resene Hot Toddy all work especially well with the brighter, tomato-tone reds.

Ruby dreams

The depth of colour in this burgundy-hued headboard painted in Resene Salsa brings drama, comfort and luxury together in this glamorous bedroom. The gold lamp pops boldly with the red to draw the eye, just like an expensive piece of jewellery. The rear wall is painted in Resene Bon jour and the timber floor is stained in Resene Colorwood tinted to Resene Natural. The bedside table is in Resene Jaguar. Project by Kate Alexander, image by Bryce Carleton.

Shades like Resene Salsa and Resene Persian Red bring instant warmth when you’re ready to hunker down for winter. But they also bring drama, sophistication and luxury, working particularly well against plush fabrics and other jewel tones. If you want to refresh your bedhead, depending on the size you might even get away with using a few Resene testpots to get the job done. For complementary shades, try Resene  Gold Dust, a chic deep red like Resene Arthouse or a dusky pink red like Resene Vintage

A rosy invitation

As far as renovation projects go, painting a front door is one of the smallest, cheapest and easiest projects you can do, and even better - it can be completed in just one day. This bright front door is painted in Resene Pohutukawa, weatherboards in Resene Merino, bench and plant pot in Resene Alabaster, large pot in Resene Digeridoo, small pot in Resene Brown Sugar and the deck is stained in Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Natural. Project by Sarah Kolver, image by Bryce Carleton.

It’s one of the first things people see when they enter your home or walk past on the street – nothing quite says, ‘Welcome home, come on in’, quite like a freshly painted front door. Red front doors have the richest history in many cultures. To the European settlers in colonial America, red front doors symbolised a friendly home for travellers and a safe spot for horses to rest. In Scotland a red front door was historically a sign of pride as homeowners would paint their door red when they had finished paying off their mortgage. In Feng Shui, the front door is the Mouth of Chi and red front doors on those facing South will create a welcoming energy. Red is also a popular front door colour in all types of homes locally, with Resene Pohutukawa a firm favourite and Resene Pioneer Red a popular colour on villas.

There are thousands of Resene colours to choose from when painting your front door so it’s easy to create a door you adore for street appeal and the perfect match to your personality. Try a deep dark red like Resene Lonestar, a splash of the brightest red, Resene Poppy, or if you’re after a terracotta red, try Resene Mexican Red. Use a gloss finish, like Resene Enamacryl, to help your colour pop.

Now we’ve got you ‘reddy’ to try this fabulous shade in your home, head along to your local Resene ColorShop to grab some red paint. You’ll also be supporting our Paint it Red campaign where every red Resene testpot 60 mL bought at a Resene owned ColorShop (NZ) will raise $1 to support Cure Kids for Red Nose Day 2023. Red testpots start with the code TR and exclude metallic or wood stain testpots.
