Sarah rescues a plain Jane house
Sarah Clarkson has taken a plain Jane of a modern house and turned it into a character-filled home with fun features using a variety of Resene colour, and despite a tight budget.
Bought three years ago, she used the larger size of the house to her advantage, using a stony-grey neutral instead of white for a contemporary look. She also reasoned that her vibrant feature walls could be easily painted out if she tired of them.
Sarah tells us more:
What Resene colours have you used and what inspired those choices?
I’ve used Resene Stonehenge in different strengths. It really was one of those colours I didn’t like on the paint chart but looked great once I had painted a test patch. The trims and doors are in Resene Hint Of Grey and for the various feature walls and details I just used a range of Resene testpots.
How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors?
I wanted it to be modern and fresh but didn’t want to have bright white walls. The house is large and open-plan so I didn’t have to worry about making it appear smaller by having darker colours. With the creative painting like the chevron and geo walls, I just really wanted to experiment with different colours. I love this style of painting as I know it’s easy to replace when I no longer like it, and it's fun.
Top tip: For projects like Sarah’s geometric and chevron walls, use a low-tack masking tape from Resene so that you don’t damage existing paintwork as you create the design.
What part of the house are you most happy with?
The kitchen, lounge and dining areas were in the most need of love and attention and there was no carpet. I modified the kitchen but kept the same coloured cabinets and benchtops to keep costs lower.
What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?
Don’t be afraid of using some bold colours. I’ve gone grey, but I love the wee pops of colour too.
A surprise was that the wallpaper from Resene was so easy to put up. Way easier than other wallpapering I’ve done. I bought cheaper and thinner wallpaper for my laundry nook - never again!
What was the biggest decorating, renovating or building challenge for this project?
My budget was the biggest challenge – but I don’t think it shows in the final product… hopefully. I like to do things myself and I’m a firm believer that having a tight budget doesn’t mean your home can’t look great.
Do you have a favourite colour, and if so why is it your favourite?
I love lots of colours, which might be why my Resene testpot collection is so large – I’d like to say thanks to Wayne at the Hokitika Resene ColorShop for not judging me while building my collection and my many visits to buy paint.
I do love Irish green (like Resene Salem) as it reminds me of travels in Ireland.
Sarah’s house is currently for sale.

Sarah has used turquoise accents to pop out against the Resene Stonehenge walls.

A sweetly retro wallpaper (Manhattan 2692-18 from Resene) is used as a headboard feature wall. The other walls are Resene Stonehenge, and the ceiling is Resene Hint Of Grey (also known as Resene Sea Fog).

In Sarah’s office, a geometric pattern is created with four fresh greens, from the top Resene Wellywood, Resene Salem, Resene Citrus and Resene Crusoe. The charcoal is Resene Mine Shaft, the pale grey is Resene Eighth Stonehenge and the main wall colour is Resene Stonehenge.

Sarah worked around existing cabinets and benchtops in her kitchen to save money, but created a feature panel in various variants of Resene Stonehenge as well as Resene Allports, Resene Kitsch, Resene Dauntless, Resene Escape, Resene Such Fun, Resene Teal Blue and Resene Pure Pewter metallic.

Sarah’s main bedroom is a restful haven of black and stony grey, with Resene Stonehenge walls, complemented by a Rasch wallpaper.

The cat certainly enjoys Sarah's cosy decorating style.

Sarah’s hall sports a striking chevron pattern in Resene Stonehenge and Resene Eighth Stonehenge.

Another bedroom also features chevron patterning, this time on the bed linen, while the walls are Resene Stonehenge.
