Six easy paint ideas

It’s amazing what you can do with a small amount of paint and a bit of inspiration. Take a look at some of these clever projects to get you inspired:

Summer sizzle

A fantastic way to perk up a drab courtyard, use three strong summery colours to repaint your outdoor furniture instead of just the one. This gives your setting an eye-catching out-of-the-square look and makes it easy to update – next year, simply repaint one of the chairs for a whole new look.

The trick is to use colours of similar tonal value and quality. Here, the colours are all quite saturated and ‘hot’. If this isn’t your style, go for three icy pastels, or three neutrals, or three sea-washed blues. The combinations are endless.

This particular setting was inspired by the feel of a Greek Island, using a cool pale blue wall as the backdrop, painted in Resene Onahau. The decorative shutter is in Resene Elvis with Resene Optimist on the table, Resene Flashback on the orange chair and Resene Knock Out on the deep pink chair.  The pot is in Resene Pelorous.

Taking notice

Another summery project, this beachy noticeboard is made by adding a simple batten frame to a sheet of grooved plywood. The whole board the frame were given a coat of Resene Triple Pearl Lusta then the ‘boards’ were sectioned off and painted in Resene Jordy Blue, Resene Evolution and Resene Double Pavlova, leaving some areas in the base colour. Don’t worry if it looks a little patchy; you want an aged look anyway. Sand back the topcoat colours for a distressed effect by dragging the sanding block in one or two firm strokes along the boards.

Blue by you

Sea-inspired blues, a woven rug and an old painted crate – you can almost smell the salty tang of the beach. Rather than paint the crate in just one colour, we’ve taken advantage of the different boards to use a tonal scheme of Resene Double Bianca (top), Resene Breeze (middle) and Resene Seeker (bottom). The Lusty’s Lloyd Loom chair to the side is painted in Resene Captain Cook, the basket is in Resene Waterfront, the floor is in Resene Double Bianca and the wall is in Resene Meltwater.

Dip it

The paint-dipped look is easy to create and very on-trend. This old chair has been base-coated in Resene Alaska, then the legs and top ‘dipped’ in Resene Limitless. The ‘dipping’ is actually created by masking off the areas, and painting them with a brush, but for smaller items (wooden spoon handles, coat hooks etc), you can actually just dip them in a pot of paint. For any pieces of furniture or items that will used (as opposed to being just decorative), use Resene Enamacryl, a hard-wearing waterborne paint. The wall behind is painted in Resene Black Haze.

Just take a roller…

This creative homeowner needed an eye-catching artwork for the wall above his fireplace so he painted a couple of ready-made canvases in Resene Black, and using a small roller and a testpot of Resene Limerick, he created a striking artwork reminiscent of bamboo stems. Perfect!

Put a lid on it

Letters, words, messages – they’re appearing everywhere as today’s essential decorative device. But if you’re a bit over the usual treatments, here’s a new twist. Take your old paint lids, add some colour and a letter or word, team them with painted frames and arrange on the wall.

In this scheme, the letter home is showcased on lids painted in Resene Knock Out (pink), Resene Limerick (green), Resene Seeker (turquoise) and Resene Southern Cross (yellow), with a ‘full-stop’ lid in Resene Pukeko. Those same colours are used to paint a variety of frame styles, then the whole composition is hung on a wall of Resene Foundry. We used Resene Blackjack for the lettering.

If you try to brush paint onto the lid, it will be quite streaky so to save having to do another coat later, just pour paint from the testpot into the lid and swirl it around to cover, then let it dry. It will take a while to dry as the paint is quite thick but you will get a lovely ‘skin’ of paint.
