What is your role at Resene and what does it involve?

I am one of the Auckland Residential Colour Consultants. My primary role is assisting people with interior and exterior colour choices. I started out in the Newmarket ReseneColorShop back in 2020 looking for a new career path. I immediately took a loving to colour matching and making custom colours, and then found my love of helping people find their perfect colours too. I now look after West and North Auckland and get to do this every day.

Tell us about some of your favourite projects using Resene.

I recently met this lovely couple at their beautiful home they built by themselves 20 years ago. The house had so many interesting details and a lot of colour. Thinking down the track of potentially selling, we discussed if it's best to be safe and repaint all of the interior an off white. Because this house was so unique and they would be living there for quite a while yet, I encouraged them to not focus on the resell and focus on what they wanted.

For the walls I recommended Resene Canterbury Clay as we liked the idea of having a golden feel throughout. Resene Spanish White for the ceilings and woodwork. For feature colours, Resene Hot Toddy, Resene Chelsea Gem, Resene SorrentoandResene Shadowy Blue. It was lovely to see a rich combination of colours and knowing they loved them.

What is you biggest design or product tip?

ALWAYS test your colours a classic! Colour can be both amazing and frustrating where in different lights and against different surroundings it completely changes. Make sure to always test your colours and samples in the space you're decorating. We recommend two coats of a Resenetestpot on an A2 piece of card and leaving a white border so there's no interference from what's currently there. The benefit of this is you get a large sample giving you an accurate representation of the colour and you can easily move it around the space.

Another goodie is don't do something just because it's trending, find what you love and do that.

Top tip: if you prefer to skip the testpot stage, you can order A4 drawdown paint swatches of Resene colours online, www.resene.com/drawdowns.

Can you recommend a couple of great Resene products for our readers?

I recently got to have a big play around using ReseneFX Faux Rust Effect. This is a product which can be used interior and exterior to create arust coating for decorative purposes. It's a two part process, so you first apply two basecoats onto your primed surface and then you brush on the activator which starts the rusting process. Like normal rust, it continues to develop over time.

If you like creative projects, you can have so much fun with this, creating a feature wall or applying it to ornaments. Depending on the look you're going for you can go for a consistent coat or build up layers for a more artistic effect. You've just got to remember it's actually rusting, so be careful where you apply it. You can apply a coat of Resene Aquapel to help protect and seal your work.

What are your favourite Resene colours?

These are definitely always changing but right now I'm really enjoying colours like Resene Grass Hopper, Resene SorrentoandResene Apple Blossom. They’re strong colours, but have a softness to them that make them easy on the eyes. I find them relaxing though some may not! I love these as a combo too. They’revery similar to colours in my living room at the moment.
