Women in architecture take centre stage

16 Aug 2022

Architecture fans in Nelson keep an eye out for these engaging exhibitions - A+W NZ Timeline and A+W NZ Tātuhi/Drawing Architecture: Sarah Treadwell Archive.

Taking place from 29th August to 24th September at the Refinery Artspace, the A+W NZ Timeline exhibition praises women in the architectural community, drawing attention to the gaps in the documented past of New Zealand’s architecture as a career.

Alongside the show, the A+W NZ Tātuhi/Drawing Architecture: Sarah Treadwell Archive will be on display.

The A+W NZ Timeline and A+W NZ Tātuhi/Drawing Architecture: Sarah Treadwell Archive exhibition at the Refinery Artspace in Nelson pays homage to women in architecture and the work of Dr Sarah Treadwell.

Tātuhi/Drawing Architecture was set up in 2017 in honour of Dr Sarah Treadwell’s career in architecture and her impact on architects and artists over generations. Each year, a drawing is chosen by Sarah and her nominated team, the archive functioning as a record of drawing styles over the years.

Archive drawings to date include: Oceanic Study (2017) by Sarah Treadwell, Feitu'u Faiva Long Section (2018) by Lusitania Vete, Upon Constitution Hill (2019) by Matthew Boyuan Cao, Bhāvanā by Devyani Sethi, Tūrangawaewae | A Place to Stand (2021) by Jonathan Morrish and Residue of Ink no.3 (2022) by Mikaela King.

The A+W NZ Timeline Exhibition in Nelson is sponsored by Resene and Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects: Nelson Marlborough Branch.
