Steve and Susie keep it coastal
When Steve and Susie Webling did a major renovation of their Oakura property, they called on interior designer Anna Major from Haus of Design to help them turn their bach into an entertainer’s dream.
With the bach only 50 metres from the beach, they decided to keep to a coastal theme, painting the interior in fresh and light Resene Sea Fog and filling it with natural wood cabinetry and furniture.
The beachside home is now a place that the Webling family constantly returns to as a base, with the renovation adding all the modern elements of new housing with a bach lifestyle in mind.
Anna tells us more.
What was the client’s brief and how do your design and colour choices respond to that?
Coastal was definitely the theme. Personality was also key for this property.
The house was originally a cobalt blue and carried its own identity in the surrounding area. When renovating they wanted to keep that same personality with a fresh new scheme.
Being so close to the ocean, rusty colours take their own element, so to work with that Susie and Steve loved the idea of using Resene Pioneer Red as the main colour body of the home. Pairing that with Resene Alabaster white for the trims creates a very clean colour contrast.
What was your overall design philosophy?
The design philosophy was to create a modern bach with coastal hues, and plenty of family space.
Overall the design accomplished a hard-wearing home, which concentrates on highlighting what the family finds important. This house has achieved this by featuring their art and collected homewares and their love of colour.
What part of the design are you happiest with?
The feature colour on the house exterior is a real highlight. Not many clients would be bold enough to try it, but Steve and Susie requested it.
I love their vision for colour and their braveness to go all out has definitely paid off.
I am also rather proud of the kitchen scullery door. It was put in to filter the daylight, but to keep the scullery separate from the kitchen when needed.
Is there anyone else you would like mentioned?
The architect was Jeff Salisbury The building was done by Taranaki Building and the joinery by Glen Valley Joinery.

The kitchen is filled with light, natural furnishings and walls painted in Resene Sea Fog. Resene Gravel is painted onto the kitchen island top – Anna chose the colour for its earthy gritty undertone and how well it works with the slight ash tone of Resene Sea Fog.

Elements of the beach are part of the home’s interior scheme. The walls are painted in Resene Sea Fog with a feature wall in Resene Gravel – Anna was drawn to how the warm neutral sits alongside the timber ceiling.
The feature colour for the exterior is Resene Pioneer Red with trims in Resene Alabaster. People often drive past and look at it with interest, says Anna.
Using Resene Pioneer Red for the exterior was inspired by the red rust that metals turn to when exposed to the ocean. The trims are painted in Resene Black White.
