Sunny disposition: How yellow interiors can brighten your home
With Daffodil Day approaching, we thought we would explore this zesty tone and how you can incorporate it into your home. Yellow interiors are a breath of fresh air in a world where neutral colours have long dominated home décor. From sunny and cheerful to bold and dramatic, Resene has all the yellow hues you’ll need to add warmth and vibrancy to any space.
Whether you want to create a cosy and inviting atmosphere or make a statement with a bold pop of colour, incorporating yellow through Resene paints or Resene wallpapers can help you achieve any look and feel you desire.
Lemon-aid for the soul
These gentle touches of yellow add the perfect amount of zest. This wall is painted in Resene Meringue, round table in Resene Illuminate, tall vase in Resene Creme De La Creme, medium vase in Resene Yuma and tealight holder in Resene Coconut Cream.
With its muted tonal yellows and creams this is a room you could just imagine sinking into and escaping from the world – it’s no wonder that warmer colours are often the ones we turn to following periods of upheaval and change – so it’s no surprise that soft citrus shades are back in favour. Is there anything more rejuvenating and optimistic than sweet and enveloping yellow? Add furnishings and bedding in pale yellow and anchor it all with a floor finished in Resene Colorwood Breathe Easy or Resene Colorwood Whitewash to give a subtle blonded effect. If you wanted to add an earthier note, try Resene Fluffy Duck or Resene Athena, or to give it a fresh botanical twist, Resene Springtime, an effervescent yellow or Resene Nirvana, a salty yellow-green.
Sun-kissed siesta
This bedroom’s monochromatic accessories provide fresh contrast for the wall in Resene Cleopatra. The floor is finished in Resene Colorwood Mid Greywash, plant pot in Resene Cleopatra, bedside table in Resene Poured Milk and Resene Charcoal and table lamp in Resene Whitewash. Deep golden yellows and ochres give this space a sense of comfort and warmth, making it a great colour choice for those who want to create a cosy and welcoming bedroom. Although warm, excitable colours are sometimes not recommended for bedrooms as they may discourage sleep, the rich tones of Resene Cleopatra have enough earthiness to give it a calming, cocooning edge.
When dealing with a strong colour such as this, keep other elements in the room less colourful and more graphic. In this bedroom, black and white provide a crisp counterpoint to the gold in the striped bedside table, but you can also try contrasting shades like deep navy blues such as Resene Surfs Up and Resene Bullitt, or dark teals such as Resene Aquamarine and Resene Deep Teal.
They call me mellow yellow
Bright, happy walls in Resene Chenin are complemented by the floor in Resene Mellow Yellow. The two-door cabinet is in Resene Double Spanish White. Chair from Nood. Project by Vanessa Nouwens, image by Bryce Carleton.
Yellows in interior design have long been known for their ability to create happy and energised spaces, but it’s only in recent years that softer, more muted or pastel yellows have come to the fore. When splashed across the walls of a kitchen or study, yellow creates feelings of confidence and joy. Research has also found that people who work in yellow rooms appear to be more active and conscious. Jumpstart your day by painting a kitchen feature in Resene Mellow Yellow and pair with cabinetry in a warm white such as Resene Half Bianca or Resene Rice Cake.
Try adding accents throughout the room if you want to break up the monochrome. Colours that work great with yellow are pasture greens like Resene Koru and Resene Highland, watery blues like Resene Zephyr and Resene Moby, and terracotta oranges like Resene Tuscany and Resene Mai Tai.
Tropical sunrise
Tropical and warm is the feeling that Resene Wallpaper Collection 37860-1 gives us, pairing well with ceramic and clay decor, lush greenery and natural fabrics like linen and jute.
The golds, browns and yellows in this wallpaper, from the Resene Mata Hari Wallpaper Collection, add warmth and sunshine to any room, making it feel bright and cheerful. The tropical motifs can bring a sense of the outdoors inside, creating a relaxing and calming atmosphere.
This is a great choice for those who want to create a bold and unique interior design statement. Try pairing this design with wood wash finishes like Resene Colorwood Whitewash for a beachy feel or Resene Colorwood Dark Rimu wood stain for a more sophisticated vibe. For paint pairings, try colours on your adjacent walls like Resene Half Doeskin, a subtle beige, a darker dusty beige like Resene Alamo or a warm white like Resene Alabaster.
When using yellow in your home, it is important to consider the balance with other colours and elements in the room to create a cohesive and harmonious look. Whether you choose to go all-out with yellow or use it as an accent colour, incorporating this sunny shade into your home can help to brighten up your day and bring a sense of joy to your space.
