Susan and Jeremy's life beyond white

Sure, Susan Templer is in a lucky position. As an interior designer she has the skill to choose a range of colours for her house with confidence, and not just opt for an all-over neutral scheme. When she and husband Jeremy took on the renovation of their mid-century style 1960s home, she treated each room individually using different Resene colours, and has this advice for others: “Be brave. Think about the colours you love, how they make you feel and what feelings you want to experience in a specific room of your house. Then don’t be afraid to use those colours. There is life beyond white!”

How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors? What was your overall philosophy?

I approached each room individually. In the upstairs, open-plan part of the house, the colours are more neutral and consistent. But each room that can be closed off has it’s own personality, and colour scheme. Some types of colours repeat, but not necessarily the exact colour, for example where I use different blues and browns. The important thing is that the design of each room addresses its specific function and that the colours match the furnishings, or create the right mood for the room’s purpose.

What are some examples of that approach?

As an example, I used three different types of soft blues in the house. In my studio, Resene Robin Egg Blue is a perfect match to my antique day bed and curtain fabrics. But because there is so much furniture in this room, I didn’t want it everywhere. Instead I have it as accents – on the doors and have also painted my two large architectural drawer cabinets in this colour.

I love blue and brown together so in the library, Resene Quarter Powder Blue matches the sofa fabric and Resene Monkey works with the blinds.

Then in the laundry, I've chosen a fresh beachy feel. The Resene Half Escape picks up the lightest blue in the mosaic splashback and goes nicely with the Resene Buttery White architraves and adjoining walls.

What part of the house are you most happy with?

Tough question because I love all of it! I spend the most time (when not working in my studio) in the library. I love the colours, and looking at the bookshelves, and just relaxing on that great, comfy sofa.

Do you have a favourite colour, and if so why is it your favourite?

I really don’t have a favourite colour. I like different colours for different applications. For example, I love shades of orange and rust in my clothing and accessories, and I am drawn to gold and yellow glass accessories. But paint colours depend on so many variables that I can’t pick a favourite. The walls in my previous homes have been just as colourful, but in completely different shades.

The kitchen cabinets were stained dark brown to match the dining room table (get the look with Resene Deep Oak). One wall has recessed cabinets and Resene Triple Mondo was selected to match. On the other side of the kitchen, the light green Resene Half Lemon Grass echoes the lightest green tile in the mosaic splashback and frames the greenery outside.

Resene Blanc was chosen as a neutral backdrop in the entrance hallway to highlight artwork and the colourful collectables on the shelves.

The Resene Quarter Lemon Grass on the back wall of the hall picks up the light green of the rug and continues the colour of the kitchen back wall.??

Susan’s love of using blue and brown together manifests in the library with Resene Monkey matching the blinds and Resene Quarter Powder Blue matching the sofa fabric.

Susan wanted this bathroom to feel soothing and spa-like. She chose Resene Double Biscotti to go with the limestone tile with Resene Half Biscotti on the ceiling. Says Susan: “I don’t like the contrast of a white ceiling in a room as small as a bathroom.”

Susan has made the laundry feel fresh, bright and beachy by using Resene Half Escape. This colour picks up the lightest blue in the mosaic splashback and goes nicely with the Resene Buttery White architraves and adjoining walls.
