The 100-year-old Nelson villa restored by renovation masters, Alice and Caleb
Alice and Caleb are certainly no strangers to a challenging DIY project – sledgehammers, paint brushes and power tools have been at the ready for the last decade. The couple have renovated ten houses together across the country, including the winning home on The Block NZ in 2013. Their latest South Island project is a Nelson villa. Clever use of Resene paints (like Resene Green Meets Blue) and wallpapers from the Resene Wallpaper Collection have kept the home’s heritage style while giving it a modern edge.
“We knew the Nelson region was one spot we definitely wanted to get to, even though neither of us had spent any time there. Initially it was all anecdotal, hearing comments from people we know who rave about the area – this alone was compelling enough,” Alice says.
The pair love homes with heritage that need restoring. “For me it feels like keeping a part of history still present in our modern lives. This house was a 1910s beauty, a flat faced villa with a central hallway and high studs. There was another big outside area screaming for some attention.”
Alice says design-wise, she was inspired by the character of the house and wanted to embrace that look. Resene wallpapers and paint colours played a key role in achieving this. “Modern wallpaper inspired by traditional patterns and design is on trend for modern homes. It’s a simple way to give an old world look to a newly renovated home.” High ceilings meant they could go bold with pattern and colour, adding plenty of texture and contrast to the walls, she says.
Warm and inviting white Resene Alabaster set the tone for the entire home. Knowing it complements so many colours and patterns, the couple say they knew it was their best option to use for most of the walls. Ceilings across the house are in Resene Quarter Alabaster, while trims and doors are in Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel tinted to Resene Quarter Alabaster.
Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom tinted to Resene Quarter Alabaster shines in the kitchen. “I went with a strong white colour scheme with my paint selection in order to have our black kitchen pop. It was a great combo,” says Alice. To replicate the black cabinetry look in your home, try Resene Black or Resene Nero.
Wallpaper takes centre stage in the hallway. Sophisticated and neutral Resene Wallpaper Collection RD80029 lines the bottom half of the hall, and bold monochrome floral Resene Wallpaper Collection 5269-2 lines the top.
Next door in the lounge, Resene Wallpaper Collection GLA803 is dainty and soft, in contrast to black furnishings and Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Quarter Alabaster on the door.
The master bedroom features the villa’s boldest use of colour, with Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Green Meets Blue on a stunning panelled wall behind the bed, the bedside tables and wardrobe. “Resene Green Meets Blue has been on my paint colour wishlist for a very long time. Before this renovation I had never worked with the blue tones before and this soft grey-green with a hint of blue gave me confidence to explore.”
With a strong feature colour, people will often love it or hate it, Alice says, but feedback from this room is clear: Resene Green Meets Blue is a crowd pleaser. Resene Wallpaper Collection 90240 is elegant on the opposite walls.
Alice and Caleb did the majority of the renovation themselves with two kids in tow, Alek (5) and Mika (3). The biggest challenge was the size of the project, and not a lot was straightforward, they say. “Renovation relies a lot on problem solving, finding ways to create the look you want, improving the health of the house and working within a budget and timeframe that works for you.”
The kids wanted colour in their room, so Alice selected a range of pastel colours for their furniture. Pastels complement the rolling waves of the Japanese-inspired Resene Wallpaper Collection 100381515. Toy boxes and a play kitchen were custom-made by Caleb, and decked out in Resene Soothe, Resene Haven, Resene Quarter Alabaster and Resene Santas Grey.
“Painting furniture is a great way to give life to old pieces and also bring colour into a space without having to add it to your walls. I was surprised that I loved the Resene Santas Grey of the wardrobe and play kitchen – I’m not normally a fan of anything with a purple tone – but I found this colour to be stunning.”
The exterior was the biggest transformation of the home. Caleb built the deck, did the paving, laid the ready lawn and rebuilt some of the fence. Alice painted the whole exterior of the house, aiming for a traditional look with a modern element, achieved with a black picket fence in Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Black. The villa is fresh in Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Umber White on the weatherboards and pergola, windows and door trims in Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene All Black and the concrete porch in Resene Grey Friars. The front door stuns in bright Resene Coral Tree.
“The best advice I can give to anyone is to work with the aesthetic of your existing house, allow it to inspire your design and add elements that emphasise the features of the house you like. Embrace the house’s quirks and charms and find ways to maximise what you have,” says Alice. “A lot of our favourite design elements in this house were a response to thinking creatively, restoring and adding to what was already there.”
The Richmond villa has since sold, and naturally, the family are working on their next renovation adventure. Find their design tips and follow their journey at www.pearsonandprojects.com
Top tip: Hanging wallpaper? Make sure to always strike a new vertical line on each wall. Use a wallpaper smoothing brush or smoother to apply the wallpaper to the wall. Move from the centre of the length to the edges, pushing any bubbles away as you go. If the paper creases or wrinkles, carefully pull the paper from the bottom past the crease and slowly smooth back into place and trim. Never rush a wallpaper job.

The fence surrounding the home is in Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Black. “I wanted to go for a traditional look with the white exterior but with a modern element in the black trims. It highlighted the character of the villa and made an impact,” says Alice. “Painting a traditional ‘white picket fence’ black was about doing something a little unexpected and didn’t close in the space visually.”
Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom tinted to Resene Quarter Alabaster is slick and modern in the kitchen on the walls and ceiling, and natural light floods in from a skylight. To replicate the black joinery in your home, try Resene Black or Resene Nero.
“Originally, the dining and kitchen space was by far the worst space in the house, we nearly didn’t purchase the house because of its flow and layout,” Alice says. “But as we planned the design and layout, we focused on the positive things about the room, like well-lit places in the room or the large floor plan of the kitchen. After the renovation – it was our favourite room in the house.” Resene SpaceCote Kitchen & Bathroom tinted to Resene Quarter Alabaster keeps the look fresh on the walls and ceiling.

It’s monochrome magic in the villa’s hallway. Traditional yet modern Resene Wallpaper Collection RD80029 lines the bottom half of the hall, and bold monochrome floral Resene Wallpaper Collection 5269-2 is on the top. Resene Quarter Alabaster is on the ceiling and architraves.

Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Green Meets Blue has been painted on a beautiful panelled wall behind the bed, the bedside tables and wardrobe. “What I love about this colour is that because it has hints of grey and blue to hits green, it is very complementary to so many other colours.”Resene Wallpaper Collection 90240 is chic and subtle on the opposite walls.
“In our master bedroom Resene Green Meets Blue worked perfectly with the greys in the wallpaper and the carpet, as well as contrasting with the pops of mustard.” Resene Wallpaper Collection 90240 is on the opposite walls. Resene Quarter Alabaster is on the ceiling, door and architraves.
