The winner of Tiny House of the Year is dark and delightful in Resene Half Nocturnal
Small homes don’t need to be white and big design ideas definitely come in small packages. The winning design for New Zealand Tiny House of the Year 2022 is only 32 sqm in size, but style, functionality and colour are at the heart of the home built by Tiny House Builders NZ. The Katikati company’s Double Bridge Pohutukawa design not only took out the supreme prize in the inaugural awards, but also took out the Resene Colour Choice Award, a special prize commending colour in homes under 60sqm.
Rebecca McLean of Tiny House Builders says she’s stoked about the win.
“We’re on cloud nine,” says Rebecca.
“We’re happy when our clients are happy but winning this award is just that extra level of achievement for us.”
Colour is not only key to the functionality of the winning design – but it suits the style of the winning home’s charismatic owner, Kacey. The Katikati based healthcare worker loves colour and chose a design to suit her collection of bright second-hand furniture and furnishings. Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Half Nocturnal is the hero paint and colour of the home, featured on walls in the living area, kitchen, bathroom and main bedroom. Resene Half Nocturnal is a colour Kacey knew would work, it featured in her childhood bedroom and as an adult she still loves the versatility of this midnight charcoal colour.
“I love this dark colour,” says Kacey.
“I actually had Resene Half Nocturnal on my bedroom wall when I was 10 years old, and I loved it even when I was a teenager so it’s become my go-to. It goes so well with all my bright pieces in my home,” says Kacey.
Although the DIY adage that you should paint small spaces white to make it look larger did cross Kacey’s mind – but she wasn’t deterred to embrace her dark side. The Resene Half Nocturnal feature walls are balanced with Resene Half White Pointer on the other walls and Resene White on doors and trims to keep the space bright.
“When Tiny House Builders asked me if I’d like white walls, I thought, ‘No, ugh I don’t want white that’s not me’. I had heard all that stuff about painting the walls white to make it feel spacious blah blah, but I think my home doesn’t look dark and narrow at all, in fact it feels warm and cosy. The black and white colours are a nice contrast,” she says.
Rebecca says that although most of her clients do ask for white walls, she was excited to embrace the dark colour in Kacey’s plans.
“I think it’s awesome. The dark colour actually makes the room feel deeper and once we started painting we ended up adding more Resene Half Nocturnal to other walls because it looked so good. It frames the views of the orchard so well,“ says Rebecca.
“For the white we used Resene Half White Pointer which is a colour we use on a few of our homes. It has a nice warmth and softness to it while still feeling crisp. It helps the space feel like a home and not a caravan. We used to use Resene Black White, but Resene White Pointer is a bit more comforting I think,” says Rebecca.
Resene Colorwood Whitewash on the birch ply ceiling keeps the space light while also allowing the natural wood grain of the ply to show through creating additional texture and softness.
Pops of colour come through in the house with Kacey’s colourful second-hand pieces such as a green hand-painted bedside table and a stained-glass window in the kitchen created by Kacey’s mum Michelle who is a talented leadlight artist. The laundry painted in Resene Aquarius is another pop of colour in the home -although it was completely unplanned
“I was bored one weekend and I was looking at testpot shades and I thought, ‘You know what, blue looks good. And so I painted the walls bright blue and I love it,” says Kacey.
Kacey’s tiny house dream began back in 2019 when she was a uni student in Wellington. She had always loved tiny homes, often watching the You Tube channel Living Big In A Tiny House. One day her parents suggested she build one of her own on their avocado and kiwifruit orchard. Suddenly her dream became a reality. Clever design and space-saving features like a pantry under the stairs. storage under the beds and a rotating cupboard in the kitchen mean that the house never feels cramped or cluttered she says.
“When I was flatting in Wellington I was renting a tiny room for $250 a week and I was sharing a bathroom with five people. So, for me my tiny home feels like lots of space.”
Tiny House Builders also won the Best Commercial Build for their Kowhai design – a single level pod design well suited for baches and seniors.
“Tiny homes are a great option for people from all walks of life, and it’s great to celebrate all the great New Zealand designs out there in these awards,” says Rebecca.
Rebecca’s top tip for going tiny
Tiny Houses on Wheels are usually classed as vehicles and often don’t require the same permits and consents as regular homes as they can be parked up nearly anywhere. Guidance for tiny homes has recently been added to the Building Act to provide clarity to tiny house owners and builders. For people considering the world of tiny homes Rebecca’s biggest piece of advice – other than familiarising yourself with the laws - is to consider the way you live when planning your home.
“When we’re designing a tiny home we ask our clients to think really carefully about how they live. Do they fold their laundry or hang it up, do they cook mainly on a stovetop, how do they get dressed in the morning? ,” says Rebecca.
“When we get to know their daily routines we can design a home that suits their needs and the way they live,” says Rebecca.

Resene top tip: Resene Colorwood Whitewash is ideal for woodwork like ply as it provides a soft colour that allows the natural wood grain to show through. Resene Colorwood Whitewash will provide additional protection to the timber and is suitable for ceilings, flooring, cabinetry, walls and furniture.
Resene Half Nocturnal is a feature colour painted in the living room, kitchen and mezzanine bedroom of Kacey’s tiny house. Resene Half White Pointer on the opposite walls, Resene White on the trims and Resene Colorwood Whitewash on the ceiling create a monochrome palette which complements Kacey’s colourful pieces like her rainbow string curtain.
Kacey loves that her tiny home allows her to have a small environmental footprint. “It’s made me realise I don’t need much stuff in my life, I love how this home connects me with nature,” she says. The back kitchen wall is painted in Resene Nocturnal and the other walls and ceiling on the lower level are Resene Half White Pointer. Her mother’s stained glass window is another colourful feature in the home.
Resene Half White Pointer is used on the outer wall in Kacey’s tiny house, keeping it light and bright while also complementing her colourful décor.
Blue and yellow lightbulbs cast additional colour in the living space in the evening transforming the Resene Half White Pointer walls into a rainbow in the evenings. Resene Half Nocturnal on the feature walls grounds the look and also creates contrast with the plantation shutters in the bedroom.
The Resene Half Nocturnal walls in Kacey’s bedroom frame the country views. Resene Colorwood Whitewash on the birch ply ceiling creates softness while showing the natural wood grain.
Kacey’s home features many recycled treasures such as a hand-painted cabinet she bought from an op shop (for a similar look try Karen Walker Chalk Colour paint in Resene Half Washed Green. The walls are painted in Resene Half Nocturnal and the ceiling is Resene Colorwood Whitewash.
Who says washing clothes has to be dull? Resene Aquarius in the laundry adds a pop of colour. Kacey painted the laundry after a spur of the moment testpot purchase one weekend. Ceiling in Resene Half White Pointer.
Ventilation is important in tiny houses says Rebecca, which is why there’s an extractor fan in the bathroom and double rangehood in the kitchen. The bathroom mirror also features a demister. Resene Half Nocturnal and Resene Half White Pointer keeps the space chic and sophisticated.
Resene Half White Pointer on the walls and Resene Half Nocturnal on the cabinetry connect the bathroom to the rest of the home – creating a cohesive design.
A second mezzanine area on the opposite side to the bedroom creates a multifunctional space that is either a living and TV area or a second bedroom. Walls in Resene Half Nocturnal and Resene Half White Pointer and the ceiling in Resene Colorwood Whitewash provide a monochrome backdrop that highlights Kacey’s colourful treasures such as her second-hand vintage wool blankets.
The dark colour of the tiny house blends into the natural environment of the avocado and kiwifruit orchard. COLORSTEEL in Ebony and Resene Ebony on the exterior are recessive colours on the landscape.
