These transportable cottages provide modern living with a vintage twist

David and Kirsty Wraight’s cottages aren’t just transported to you – they transport you to another time. The couple own and run David Wraight Cottages; a company that specialises in the construction of fully transportable weatherboard cottages. Inspired by the architectural character of yesteryear, every custom cottage is brought to life with a fresh Resene colour palette.

The busy team is comprised of David Wraight, who designs the cottages and his wife Kirsty who handles the accounts and kitchen design. They’re accompanied by their business partner, David Gee; the siteworks manager and their sales consultant Whi. Together the team create these forever homes in their building yard and then transport them across New Zealand.

Once a cottage is designed and built, Kirsty gets to work on planning the colour palette. Her choices stem from her love of character homes, details she has noticed in photographs or the discovery of a colour she has never used before.

“It’s exciting to be able to create something with character in today’s market,” says Kirsty.

“Every time we do a spec home, I have to put the look for the home together. I try to change things around so they don’t look too similar.

“Every client has different tastes and likes different colours so we’re always trying new things.”

Exterior design is limited as the team must work within the confines of a transportable house size. So, instead of changing the overall architectural design of each new cottage, they add personality through interior colour and mouldings. Kirsty works with painter David Price to colour the cottages in vibrant Resene paint. “Everyone knows Resene paint colours,” says Kirsty. “We have used Resene for many, many years and it’s a great product.

“There are great colours to choose from and most importantly we get great service from our local Resene ColorShop.”

Kirsty’s favourite project to date has been the creation of The Colour Cottage. “I love the vibrancy of the Resene Sea Nymph kitchen with the Resene Apple Green walls,” says Kirsty. “It’s got such a welcoming feel to it and the ceiling and trim are painted in Resene Elderflower.”

David is happiest with one of their most recent projects. “I love the colour scheme and overall layout of the home,” says David, whose favourite room is the kitchen which glows with Resene Quarter Rice Cake on the dado and ceilings, and Resene Bubble White on the wall above and kitchen units. The kitchen island and barn door are painted in Resene Casper; a pale blue grey pastel.

A standout room for the couple’s business partner, David Gee, was the kitchen and living space painted in Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue with Resene Quarter Bianca on the ceiling and below the moulding. The light and airy walls were grounded by the Resene Zeus highlights used in the kitchen shelving units.

Another daring design from Kirsty included The Gelato Room. Recently completed, the bedroom is dazzling in a fresh coat of Resene Gelato. The graceful, pale cherry pink walls brighten the space and have a modern take on the 50s pastel palette.

“I also love our Resene Brandy Rose guest room,” says Kirsty. “When the paint went on the walls in this room I said I had ordered an apple green candlewick bedspread and some chocolate cushions to match, most people thought I had completely lost the plot, but David and I love the room.”

The team use New Zealand-sourced timber in their cottages and complete the entire interior decorating process before the cottage is moved. “Completing the interior ourselves means we know everything is completed to the standard which we have set ourselves,” says Kirsty. “It is also easier and more cost effective to complete the house in the yard, as it is a safe and practical workspace.”

A David Wraight Cottage takes the team around three months to build and paint. The cottage is then transported by Coffey House Removals to the client’s chosen site and a veranda and decking are added. “The transportation is an exciting time for us,” says Kirsty. “No matter how many times David and I get up early to see a house off, the excitement is still there.

“The biggest challenge for us is the logistics of being a transportable company. The arranging of say a ferry or barge to transport the house and then the hours that the transport company are allowed on the road is huge.”

One of the more challenging moves included transporting a cottage into the Marlborough Sounds by barge. “We had to use two diggers to help the truck and cottage up a hill to place it on the site,” says Kirsty.

With their vintage flair, sustainable materials and exquisite workmanship, David Wraight Cottages are modernising classic living for Kiwis across New Zealand.

What is a transportable?

A transportable home is a house that is built off-site, such as in a building yard. Once the home is finished, it is then transported to the new location using a truck. Here, the home will be connected to services such as plumbing and power, and extra exterior features such as decking will be added.

There are several practical advantages to building a transportable home. If the home is built in a yard, there are specific systems in place that means there are no hold ups due to the weather. A permanent yard situation also means that health and safety procedures are simpler and scaffolding can be stored easily.

The transporting of the home itself will require road consents for the size of the load being carried and the truck will be accompanied by 2-3 pilot vehicles and a vehicle designed to lift powerlines.

Once the cottage is transported to its destination, it is fitted with a veranda and decking area to complete the look. The facings and trim are in Resene Chalk Dust and the weatherboards are in a calming Resene Half Dusted Blue.

Kirsty’s ‘Brandy Rose Room’ pairs the smooth sandalwood pink Resene Brandy Rose on the walls with tongue and groove panelling and the ceiling in crisp Resene Quarter Rice Cake.

’The Gelato Room’ is playful yet elegant, coloured in Resene Gelato. To retain the freshness of Resene Gelato, pair your walls with Resene Quarter Rice Cake or fresh Resene White. Kirsty and David use different interior linings that make the cottages very easy to heat and cool, which is great for the environment as they minimise power usage.

David Gee’s favourite room uses Resene Bianca on the ceiling, trim and walls below the dado moulding and a smoky Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue on the walls. The shelving unit in the kitchen is highlighted in Resene Zeus and the interior kitchen doors are painted in Resene Quarter Delta.

Sales Consultant Whi loves this cottage kitchen, painted in calm and misty Resene Pale Leaf with the window seat area providing a pop of colour. The two-toned wall panelling pairs Resene Elderflower and Resene Eighth Sisal. Resene Elderflower brightens the ceiling.

David Wraight enjoyed creating the layout and colour scheme of one of the company’s most recent builds. The kitchen combines Resene Quarter Rice Cake on the ceiling, trim, and dado moulding with Resene Bubble White on the walls and kitchen units. The kitchen island provides a refined pop of colour in Resene Casper.

One of Kirsty’s favourite kitchen designs, the Colour Cottage uses a vibrant Resene Sea Nymph on the kitchen cabinetry and a soft orchard Resene Apple Green on the walls. The ceiling and trim are in hazy Resene Elderflower.

The clawfoot bath adds elegance to this cottage bathroom and the feature wall in Resene Bianca lightens the room. The surrounding bathroom walls are awash in Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue.

The transportation process can often be the trickiest part of a build. This cottage was loaded onto a barge and carried into the Marlborough Sounds, where a truck and two diggers carried it up a hill to its final resting spot. Often it’s easier to move an entire house than to cart building equipment to a remote location.

After a cottage is built in the yard, it is transported, fully painted, to its destination. This home was heading to Waitarere Beach and is painted in Resene Quill Grey with Resene Snow Drift soffits and facings and Resene Forecast on the window sills.
