This Governors Bay home uses a clever colour trick to link two storeys together and fill the home with warm light (that’s not too bright)

Balance and light were at the top of Sarah Eaton’s mind when she was decorating a new home in Governors Bay, near Lyttleton. The director of Christchurch-based interior design company, Tailormade Space was asked by the homeowners to create a seaside sanctuary using “natural and honest materials” that were in harmony with the natural surroundings. Sarah used Resene paints including Resene Bluff, Resene Periglacial Blue and Resene Half Merino to create a home that reflected and connected with the beautiful views of Governors Bay.

“This is my client’s dream home,” says Sarah.

“Early in the project a palette of natural, watery tones were chosen for the home due to its uniquely beautiful location. The colours selected connect with the harbour.”

Resene Periglacial Blue, a calming icy grey blue from the Karen Walker Paints collection, is used in the  master bedroom to link it to the breathtaking views of the pale blue harbour. Resene Bluff, a steely grey blue, also complements the watery vista while highlighting some of the architectural features  of the home which was designed by Russell Devlin of Solarchitect and built by C2 Builders.

Resene Bluff is the strongest colour we used. This colour accents the central stairwell and leads you up through the home linking the different spaces together,” says Sarah.

“The feature wall stretches the length of the open spine of the home all the way to the reading area on the upper landing.”

The clients love the reading area on the upper landing so much they have given it the nickname ‘the sanctuary’.

“When there is an abundance of natural light, I tend to utilise colours that have been muted back with a bit of grey. It makes for a softer impact – the colour can be enjoyed but is still easy to live with over time,” says Sarah.

The house is a passive solar design making it highly energy-efficient. The design has feature windows on both sides of the house and makes the most of natural light and heat sources. Sarah chose Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Half Merino, an off white with a green oxide base. The neutral tone and low sheen balances out the abundant natural light.

“I just love how Resene Half Merino is so nuanced, it goes through subtle shifts, depending on how the light hits it during the day – sometimes greyer, sometimes warmer. It is a lovely ‘neutral’ neutral,” she says.

The neutral colours are balanced out with Resene Quarter Merino on the doors and trims and low Resene SpaceCote flat in Resene Double Alabaster is used on the skillion ceilings so that the light in the room is not glary.

Resene Double Alabaster blends effortlessly with the Resene Half Merino walls, providing a slightly lighter surface for the light to play on.”

Sarah advises testing the light in a room several times at different times of the day before painting.

“I recommend checking prior to painting with A4 drawdown paint swatches and moving them around the spaces to see how the colour responds. It always surprises clients how much a colour can change depending on the light.”

Architect Russell Devlin loves how the colours work with the architectural features.

“Sarah’s colour choices have made the best use of the natural light and it has helped with the brightness. A white wall would have been the wrong choice,” says Russell.

“What I’ve loved the most about this project is seeing how much the homeowners enjoy living in the space when its finished.”

Resene Half Merino on the wall and Resene Double Alabaster on the skillion ceilings make the most of the abundant natural light in this passive solar house, without making the room seem too bright.

A feature wall of Resene Bluff on the stairwell links the different levels of the home. The dark colour frames the views of the countryside. The colour contrasts well with the iO timber feature pendants from New Zealand lighting designer Mat Macmillan from Mr Ralph. The other walls are Resene Half Merino and the window trims are Resene Quarter Merino. The ceiling is Resene Double Alabaster

The reading area on the upper landing has been nicknamed ‘The Sanctuary’ by the owners because they love it so much. The area is connected to the lower levels by a Resene Bluff feature wall. The other walls are Resene Half Merino, the ceiling is Resene Double Alabaster and the window trims are Resene Quarter Merino.

The Resene Bluff walls of the staircase lead guests into the living areas. The other wall colour is Resene Half Merino and the trim is Resene Quarter Merino.

Resene Periglacial Blue from the Karen Walker Paints collection blends in seamlessly with the icy blue waters of Governors Bay. The window trims are Resene Quarter Merino and the ceiling is Resene Double Alabaster.

The light-filled kitchen is not too glary thanks to Sarah’s clever neutral colour choices: Resene Half Merino on the walls, Resene Quarter Merino on the window trims and Resene Double Alabaster on the ceiling. The pendant lights are from Noozi.
