This Gulf Harbour home was brought up-to-date with a clean palette of Resene colours

When Angela and Scott moved into their Gulf Harbour home in December 2018, the home’s interior had been pretty much untouched since it was built in 1997. But the bones of the house were in good nick, so the hardworking couple rolled up their sleeves and refreshed their new home with an up-to-date palette of clean Resene neutrals, blues and greys.

Knowing she wanted a straightforward fresh and modern look for the family home, Angela put her secret weapon to work right away: Scott, who is a painter by trade. Luckily for Angela, Scott was able to do almost all of the painting by himself. “I got to paint the occasional wardrobe!” jokes Angela.

The first area Scott was put to work in was the kitchen. Brand new cabinetry and appliances were installed, and Scott gave the rest of the room and the adjoining dining area a coat of Resene Eighth Surrender, a custom strength mixed by the team at Resene Wairau Road. The ceiling and trims were treated to a refresh in Resene Alabaster. A near white with a lightly blackened edge, Resene Alabaster is a popular choice for people wanting to create that clean and tidy feel in their living areas. Stainless appliances, floor to ceiling white cabinetry and a splash back in hexagonal ebony tiles polished off the sleek kitchen.

Thrilled with the way their custom colour turned out in the kitchen, Angela and Scott carried the scheme through to their other living area too. The combination of pale grey and cool white is a smart choice for the family area as the calm shades provide a perfect modern neutral for a busy space that sees a lot of use. Just as in the kitchen, pops of striking black are introduced in here too, this time on smart new blinds from Venluree.

The calm palette of neutral hues extends throughout the rest of the house as well. Their updated bathroom also features crisp trims and ceilings in Resene Alabaster with the fresh walls in Resene Eighth Surrender. The guest bedroom with walls washed in Resene Alabaster is a restful space for visitors.

While the main living areas feature an elegant and refined colour palette, the bedrooms are where Angela and Scott let loose to create fun spaces for their kids to enjoy. For eight year old son Kobe’s room, Scott created an impressive mountain mural inspired by his son’s love of snowboarding. Atop a base in Resene Quarter Surrender, Scott masked out mountain shapes which he then painted in Resene Half Mako and Resene Double Silver Chalice and added snowy accents adorning the peaks in Resene Alabaster. With curtains and an ottoman in a hue similar to Resene Santas Grey, it’s the details that really tie Kobe’s tonal grey room together.

Across the hall in six year old Indie’s room, a soft violet feature wall in Resene Unicorn is a fitting backdrop for gold unicorn wall decals from One Hundred Percent Heart. On the opposite wall, house-shaped hanging cubby boxes painted in Resene Bermuda, Resene XOXO, and Resene Unicorn are an adorable way for Indie to display her treasures. Adjacent walls and a ceiling in Resene Alabaster allow for the pastel accents to really shine.

Tackling the renovation of their master bedroom and ensuite over Level 4 lockdown while shops were closed might have been too big a challenge for some, but enterprising Scott took it all in his stride. He self-mixed his own custom shade using Resene Eighth Surrender, Resene Mako and Resene Alabaster to apply to the walls of both areas alongside ceilings and trim in Resene Alabaster. The result is a soft and whispery blue grey that bathes the room in tranquillity. Scott has cheekily named his creation ‘Covid Blue’. If you’d prefer to leave the mixing to the professionals, try Resene Gull Grey, Resene Zumthor, Resene Quarter Powder Blue or Resene Mystic to get a similar look.

But their interior isn’t the only area Angela and Scott have transformed. When an overzealous tree trim by a neighbour left the backyard feeling exposed, the couple put up a new fence and sprayed it in Resene Black to help it disappear into their lush tropical backdrop. Around the spa pool, they created an oasis with ingenious stencilling made using foliage found in the garden.

To match their sleek new kitchen, Angela and Scott painted their walls in Resene Eighth Surrender (a custom strength) and ceilings and trims in Resene Alabaster. The result is a crisp and airy kitchen that sets the calm tone for the rest of the house.

Scott and Angela’s modern neutral colour scheme extends from the kitchen into the living and dining room. Walls in Resene Eighth Surrender are complemented by a ceiling and trims in Resene Alabaster. The three metallic pendants lights reflect the cool grey tones in the wall colours and on the soft furnishings.

Colour plays an important role in the balance and harmony of Scott and Angela’s home. In the main bathroom, walls in Resene Eighth Surrender and trims and ceiling in Resene Alabaster create a fresh and calm colour palette.

Scott created a striking mountain mural for the walls of snowboard-loving Kobe’s bedroom. He used Resene Quarter Surrender for the basecoats and Resene Half Mako, Resene Alabaster and Resene Double Silver Chalice for the mountains.

When it came time to choose a colour for daughter Indie’s unicorn themed room, the choice was an easy one. A feature wall in Resene Unicorn is embellished with gold unicorn decals from One Hundred Percent Heart. To get a similar look, hand paint or stencil motifs in Resene Solid Gold metallic paint. Resene Alabaster is a clean contrast on the adjacent wall.

These cubby boxes are a charming and safe way for 6 year old Indie to display her most treasured possessions. The backgrounds are painted in Resene Bermuda, Resene XOXO and Resene Unicorn. They’re hung on a wall painted Resene Alabaster while the right wall is painted in Resene Unicorn.

A painter by trade, Scott created a custom mix of Resene Alabaster, Resene Eighth Surrender and Resene Mako to refresh the master bedroom and ensuite during lockdown. To get a similar look, try Resene Gull Grey. Trims and a ceiling in Resene Alabaster brings added freshness to this restful room.

The ensuite that opens into the master bedroom also got a refresh with coat of Scott’s proprietary mix of Resene Alabaster, Resene Eighth Surrender and Resene Mako. To get a similar look, try Resene Gull Grey. The ceiling and trim are in Resene Alabaster.

A new fence in Resene Black provides a streamlined backdrop for lush tropical planting in Angela and Scott’s backyard.

In this outdoor area, which is adjacent to their spa pool, Angela and Scott used leaves from their yard as stencils to create this lively tropical design. Fence in Resene Black and bird of paradise detailing in Resene California and Resene Daisy Bush.

Top tip: When choosing a dark paint or wood stain colour for your fence or deck, it’s a smart idea to opt for Resene CoolColour technology. It will help protect the surface by reflecting more of the heat from the sun’s UV rays than a normal colour and help it last longer.
