This icy shade of blue helps this new build blend into the Wanaka landscape

Jan and John's icy blue Wanaka home is hidden in plain sight, blending into the snowy mountain landscape like a chameleon. When designing this holiday home for the couple, architect Dominic Hassan wanted to reflect the beautiful Wanaka environment, from its rocky scree slopes to its tussock and bush to its glacial lakes and snow-capped peaks. Dominic also wanted to evoke the feeling of holidays of yesteryear for a family that has holidayed in this region for many years, designing a home that will stay in the family for generations.

With this vision in mind, the exterior ply and batten walls were painted in a crisp Resene Periglacial Blue with Resene Ironsand on the trim. The natural scheme continued into the foundations, painted in Resene X-200 acrylic weathertight membrane tinted to Resene Quarter Gravel.

"Glacial grey seemed an appropriate colour scheme given that the whole landscape around Lake Wanaka was formed by glaciers. Also, this colour reminds me not only of glacial ice but those 1950s caravans, faded canvas tents and old baches - good times," says Dominic.

Adds homeowner Jan:

"Our house doesn't reflect the latest trends. It reflects the landscape and our family," says Jan.

"A lot of people don't think about using colour; they just stick to their black and white world. But there are so many lovely colours out there."

John and Jan both grew up in Invercargill and spent their holidays in Central Otago. Currently living in Christchurch, the couple built their holiday house, hoping it will eventually become their forever home. The ultimate goal is to be closer to their family. With four children and their partners, grandchildren and extended family all residing in the area, adaptability in the home was key. The home had to be flexible enough to accommodate up to twelve people at a time, while at other times, it needed to be a cosy haven for Jan, John and their youngest child.

"Most of the houses around us are built for the view, but ours is built for family."

"Our home is a gathering place," says Jan. "We wanted it to be a place where our grandkids would always be excited to come."

The property developer designed the house plots so that both the front and back houses on the street would have a view of Lake Wanaka."When you open the front door, you can see right through the house and out the other side," says Jan.

With such a stunning environment outside their window, the interior design needed to highlight that beauty. Dominic created a natural colour palette using Resene Half Rice Cake and natural timber coated in Resene Aquaclear clear waterborne urethane.

The open plan living space with clearly defined areas makes it adaptable for larger family gatherings. The statement Gaboon plywood ceilings and stairwell walls are finished in Resene Aquaclear Satin. The plywood features link parts of the downstairs area together and connect to the central cedar feature wall.

"Each area has its own character, enriching the overall picture with layering and depth," says Dominic.

The non-timber walls are painted using Resene Zylone Sheen in the snowy shade of Resene Half Rice Cake to complement the timber on the walls and ceilings and Manor Atelier French Oak engineered flooring. The doors and trims are in Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel in the lighter shade of Resene Eighth Rice Cake. The ceiling is Resene SpaceCote in Resene Eighth Rice Cake

"The house had to be tough on the inside," says Dominic.

It's the little things that make this home special for Jan. There's a shower outside for the dog and the kids after a day playing in the backyard and an outdoor wood burner that means stargazing isn't confined to the summer months.

One challenge Dominic faced when designing this home was the very climate he was trying to replicate. "Dry climates like these are hard on natural timber, so it's important to use protective coatings," he says. The exterior walls in Resene Periglacial Blue are painted using Resene Sonyx 101 semi-gloss waterborne paint

For Jan and John, this home became the embodiment of what it means to fully embrace the environment and encompass their family values.

"This house owes a lot to the confidence of Jan and John," Dominic says. "The couple were happy to let the building simply reflect their personalities."

This open plan living space is cleverly defined by a mix of wooden features finished in Resene Aquaclear Satin including the stunning Gaboon plywood ceiling.  The wood is contrasted with white walls in Resene Half Rice Cake and the painted ceiling in Resene Eighth Rice Cake.

This entrance creates a warm welcome using Gaboon plywood finished with Resene Aquaclear Satin. The collection of stained-glass windows at the entrance were inspired by the plumage of the alpine parrot the kea.

The dining room, kitchen and stairwell are accented with cabinetry and wooden panelling, protected in Resene Aquaclear, complemented by Resene Eighth Rice Cake on the ceiling. The neutral palette highlights the Mondrian-style stained glass feature on the front door.

Wooden shelves add interest to the living spaces and are also a great storage solution. The plywood is finished with Resene Aquaclear Satin.
